Okay so brother diabetic is out of the hospital - he recalls none of the house destruction but it putting it back in order. Brother at other hospital has been told he will be there at least 3 more days. this is NOT GOOD. He is getting 3 antibiots all day, plus fluids. He had a bloody nose while we were there that would not stop. He looks sort of yellow. Umm, medical types can you chime in please??? |

The diabetic brother sounds like he had a hypoglycemic episode. We deal with this A LOT in EMS. When somebody's blood sugar drops they are altered and typically don't remember what happens. It's a quick fix with either some oral glucose, IV dextrose, or some Glucagon. Did your brother have any changes in his medications (like insulin lately)? Or he may have skipped a meal or something along those lines. Best for him to probably follow up with his Dr to make sure he is taking the appropriate doses of his medications. As for your other brother, a yellow tone would indicate jaundice which would indicate issues with his liver. for everybody all around |

For your diabetic brother, onwego is right, it could have been a hypoglycemic (low blood sugar for the reasons she described) event or hyperglycemic (high blood sugar), this too can cause a patient to become oriented and/or unconscious, bring on things such as diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar syndrome, etc. Seems he responded to therapy quickly, as he is d/c'd already. If he is having difficulty getting regulated, be sure they do a urine culture on him, as well as look for other areas of infection, skin, etc. As for your other brother, as far as the nose bleed, I would be worried about hypertension, having his clotting times (PT, PTT, ACT) as well as platelet count checked immediately, and of course, HCT, TP, Albumin. The jaundice can indicate abnormalities with his liver and bile ducts but also can be seen in cases of red cell destruction (see if urine looks dramatically yellow as well), which can be immune mediated and the body's way of overreacting to the sepsis (need T.bili, ALT, Alk Phos, GGT). Many, many for your brothers and family!!!!
