I know that feeling! Our lower field sprouted springs, and then all the crap weather over the winter, we couldnt even use it. Theres not one spec of grass now, but its finally almost dried. And of course it rotted out all the fence posts.

We now have a "water feature" in our back yard. The water table is so high that an artesian spring has surfaced. We had to dig a little drainage channel through the grass from the spring to our driveway so that it can drain, because there's a constant, slow trickle that was making a sodden mess of the grass. The cool thing, though, is that now I always see a wide variety of birds coming by in the morning to sip water from the channel, and this a.m. I saw that several are building nests all around our backyard. With our windows open, it's downright noisy in the early a.m. with all the bird chirping and mating calls going on!

Hey, just think how your "water feature" is increasing the value of your property. ;) Or you could call it a vernal pond, which also has curb appeal! Time to buy Gracie a snorkel?

With Gunner's latest injury, you should maybe get him water wings so he won't drown when he tries to surf in the new pond!

DQ, I can't decide if a standing water pond, or the flash flood backyard is better. With the 2 inch rainfall in one hour Tuesday, we were having running water in the backyard, barnyard and under the semi truck. We are at the bottom of the drainage for our fields and all the fields on the west side of the road. So water arrives about 2 hours after the rainfall.

We have modified the "cute creek" we had when we purchased the farm. We actually thought it was a GOOD thing to have, with it being "spring fed" from the corner (actually a field tile end) bend in the drainage ditch. I have a whole collection of the stages of "creek" in all weathers, dry to deep flood, before we put in cement tube to run water underground.

Anyway, on Tuesday, husband got home to the flooding, let the little dog out. Small dog went out to chase Big dog and got swept away in the flooding. She ran right into the water, evidently thought it was only puddles. He said she was swimming hard, but current was fast, swirling her around, and he could not catch her while fighting depth and current himself! She got swirled far enough that she got some grip out near the patio and fishpond, which are higher, to get out of the water. Husband then waded out and brought her back and locked her in the sideyard away from the water. Told me he thought she was going to be washed totally away when he couldn't catch her!!

Then he went inside for tall boots, removed the drain pipe grate, opened the covers on the pipe to allow better drainage. Amazing how much the drain grate was blocking water flow, with just thin bars. Still took a couple hours to get 90% of water out of the backyard.

I was quite surprised to hear his and the little dog, a 20# Corgi, adventures when I got home. Force of current was very strong, lots of stuff moved in the yard, so I will have to clean off the net fencing.

Pond or river, which would you rather have?

Sounds like lil' doggie needs one of those reel in leashes! Fishing for doggie. :teehee: Glad the little one was okay - scarey!

Pond. I know how to make a pond do as I wish ( and as soon as it dries enough we are putting in ADS sock pipe, a drain and out spout ) and follow the pipes. Soon it will be my beech and I will be its master and make it go and flow and be out of my pasture. :teehee:

A creek, well, those flows are quantity of water * gravity * wt of water which can equal much erosion. BAD. And we all know how water loves to win.

Yeah, I'd take pond over raging flow, absolutely!!

Speaking of flows, We have not yet found a farmer to till the top of the hill area for replant - and now I want some closure to this 'shoot the barn' thing before we get too hog wild - I am sure there are clues out there (washed away now? :pissed: )

IF we could get some good rootbed there that would help eliminate some of the pond effect.......

After we finish adding height to the barn doors, after the new trench for proper electrical and water to the barn and a phone line......and then the drive..... :sigh:
