My Norton is up and I simply cannot afford to renew it. Anything else out there?

We use Trend Micro on our home computers. It seems to work very well. I can't attest to it's affordability, though as we get it through Mr. I's work - they provide it free because they require it to be on any computer used to access their system remotely.

At my work they're currently using Microsoft Security Essentials on the PCs.

Run FAR FAR away from Norton. Norton is evil.

Use AVG. Use the free version. Trust me. You wont regret it. SO is a know it all computer freak. This is what he puts on all our personal computers (6 set up in our house at the moment and only two of us live there lol) as well as all business computers he has repaired and all our friends.

There is absolutely NO reason ANYONE should EVER pay for anti virus software.

So tell a newbie/possible Firefox convert what all I need? I've downloaded the browser, but currently have Norton security. I've pretty much stuck with using Explorer though, because Firefox says it needs new downloads for Hulu and I haven't wanted to do that. Grrrr.. I'm also puzzled on what I need to really make things work right (ad blockers, etc).

Free AVG all the way!!! I am also engaged to a computer know-it-all, and he's now in charge of my computer after MacAfee allowed a few nasties in and I didn't know what to do.

Another vote for AVG. Not only is it (IMO) better protection than Norton, it isn't full of system-slowing bloatware like Norton and McAfee products. I once unfroze a friend's Vista machine by uninstalling her Norton Antivirus. That's how bloated it is.

Firefox or Google Chrome
AVG- Free addition
iGoogle- Allows you to customize your home page with different tiles and allows you to use themes and wallpapers.

After you download FF or Chrome you can look at their add blockers. They are so good I didnt even realize this website had adds lol.

I'll just list the Add-ons I have on my Firefox, you can pick & choose! There are SO many but these seem to work fine for me.

Adblock Plus
Cooliris (which is a cool little picture viewer, but I rarely use it)
FoxTab
Google Shortcuts
Map with Google (makes it so you can highlight any address, right click & map it with Google)
Personas (customizes your entire top toolbar with a pretty backround)
Tab Mix Plus
Xmarks (stores all passwords/login info.)

Another option, ditch Windows and get Ubantu or another cheap version of Linux. I don't
have any security stuff; I don't need more than passwords and I open most anything. I
have never, truly never, gotten the computer infected with anything. Linux does not let
the computer be taken over in the way Windows allows.
