How did you train the "Bang" play dead trick? I'd like to teach Toddy and Kota that one. |

I'm sure there's quite a few ways to teach it, depending on your dog, but this is how I did it.. hopefully I can explain this right! I use a clicker, and lots of treats when I teach tricks. I started with him in a down, then would hold a treat near his hip (make sure they're laying on one of their hips, not in the 'sphinx' like position), so make them swing their head around towards the treat, then you move the treat so they end up on their side. Does that make any sense LOL? Basically, you want to get them on their side. Once I did that, I got him so that he was basically laying on his back, clicked, treat. I don't 'name' the trick until their consistently doing that first step (so when I put the treat near his hip, 98% of the time he'd go right to his back). I wanted him to half way roll over, not just lay on his side, so I'd only click/treat when he did that behavior. This is why I LOVE clickers. Wilson knows when I have one, so all he's thinking about is getting me to click the stupid thing so he gets a treat, it's great to watch him try to figure out exactly what I want. Once they get that, I start naming it, I did "Bang" because I knew I was going to eventually make a gun out of my hand, so it made sense. All while doing this, I'd put him in a down before asking for the trick. Eventually, you want to phase out the down first, and make them do it from a standing position. If the dog gets confused, step back a level and do that for another training session. The whole thing took me about.. 5 training sessions to have it about 90% down, and maybe a full week for it to be 100%. Let me know if that made sense.. it's hard to explain something vs. actually showing someone how to do it! |

Haha that actually does make perfect sense, thank you!! I think I'm going to get a clicker. Kota is so smart I just haven't really taken the time to teach her anything. Toddy would just be cute doing it, LOL. Thanks
