Oh TBF, I'm so sorry. It's such a shock because it's so sudden, but in another way it's nice that he was in really good shape until right at the end. RIP sweet boy.

Yes, that's how we're feeling right now. I actually took a picture of all 3 dogs outside in the sun yesterday. I'll try to post iit later. I am just SOOOOOOO tired. A week of sleep deprivation with a new puppy and then up all night last night and crying the whole time. I look really scary! We're off with the kids to their homeschool group today; I"m not really up for too much but it will be a good distraction. And they are all good friends (children and adults) so the kids can just be themselves (me too.) But I think an early bedtime will be necessary. Thanks fro all the hugs. I needed them all! ![]() |

The puppy is probably a double edged sword right now-- a nice distraction, but at the same time, all you want to do is grieve for your old man and not worry about a pup's needs! Your hubby travels quite a bit doesn't he? Maybe if he is home, he can take over puppy duty for a day or two and give you a chance to recuperate a bit. Take it easy, and treat yourself to a glass of wine tonight! |

Oh, TBF, I'm so sorry to read of all this...as you know,my family raised Brittanies and I am quite fond and partial to them and remember when my best old man fell ill...it's so dern hard, and no, I'm not sure we ever are truly ready for this kind of thing with our animal companions. And, like your pupperman, it was sudden as well, so I can understand how surprised you feel. My sincerest and heartfelt prayers, best wishes and hugs to you and the family and to your Grand Old Man for being such a wonderful dog for you! It's been a very hard week or so for you...don't neglect your own self care and try to rest as much as you can...your loffly Ol' Man KNOWS you are there for him! Jingling like crazy for ya!

TBF, I am so, so sorry. I was devastated when I lost my dog Brains, so I know how you feel and I would never wish that on even my worst enemy. It's just shocking when they go so quickly and it has to be your decision.RIP old man.

So glad you got his pic with his buddies!! RIP and Godspeed Hogan TBF and family W/o a hx of a heart murmur, arrhythmia, exercise intolerance, cough or inc RR, the sudden onset is unusual for CHF in this breed. It sounds more like ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome), unfortunately, this carries a very, very grave prognosis and if they do, aggressive treatment including ventilating them is needed. Here for you anyway you need!! |

Actually, when I said he was *healthy* it wasn't exactly a full history. He did have a history of a heart mumur and also recently had elevated liver enzymes which the vet thought indicated Cushings or something else (can't remeber). We discussed treatment but decided at his age we weren't interested in anything too aggressive - he was definitely showing his age: totally deaf, cataracts, two knee surgeries and arthritis. However, his general behavior really wasn't much different aside from a few minor things, so we were in the watch and wait mode. This really snuck up on us. But he was perhaps the most stoic dog we have ever known, and proven again and again in various (self-inflicted) mishaps that would send us to the vet (things like broken toes that wouldn't even get a flinch but then showed up on the x-ray). So this is sort of what we should have expected from the old guy; that he would act fine until the end.We are really sad today but already healing. He was a great dog. I realized today that I got him when I was 26 and I'm now 40. He represented a true coming of age time in my life. |

I am so so sorry. I have certainly been there. I lost Leo a year ago the end of this month. I got him when I was 15 and he helped me through a lot of things in life. He was my constant companion and the most reliable shoulder to cry on. Its funny how you just click with a particular dog. I guess its like finding your canine soulmate. In some ways Tuli makes me miss Leo even more but I feel so blessed to have had Leo in my life, at a particular time in my life. I'm a better person for having had him. Big hugs for you and your family. They are such a gift and we are so lucky to get to have them touch our lives, even if for just what seems like a moment. |
