My poor old dog. Not sure what is going on but at a recent vet visit the vet said that dogs is age/breed are susceptible to tracheal paralysis and we were talking about occasional gag issues. Then suddenly he has been gagging in the last two days and tonight he just can't seem to catch his breath. Dh has him at the clinic and he is in triage now. :(

He's been overall very healthy but is nearly 14.

So I'm waiting for a call back. If they can't *fix* him I'm hoping for a quick and peaceful passing. :( So sad. He was my first baby. How strange that my 11 year old was comforting me tonight. :,(

Well, dh just called and essentially he is in congestive heart failure. In an oxygen tent overnight and if they can get the swelling in his heart & liver down, they think he'll be able to pull through for 6-12 months with cardiac meds. Waiting on a kidney test to see if he can handle a diuretic and if so, they'll try to get him on the road to recovery. If not, then we'll let him go peacefully; dh says that now that he's getting the oxygen he needs he's calm and is resting comfortably.

:sigh: Damn, I knew these tough days would be here someday but still don't feel very prepared.

I think he meant laryngeal paralysis, you can hear stridor when they breath .

TBF and family, I'm so sorry that your pupster isn't feeling 100% but glad to hear he is improving with therapy.

What type of dog do you have? Has he seen a cardiologist? We have made great strides in treating heart dz in dogs and cats with medical therapy, depending on the type of underlying heart dz, we have patients go 18+ mths.

If you have any questions, email me at dani@brydelle.com.

Many, many :jingles: :luck: :jingles: :luck: :jingles: :jingles: :luck: :jingles: :luck: :jingles: :jingles: :luck: :jingles: :luck: :jingles:

Thanks Brydelle. He's a brittany and nearly 14.

Unfortunately the diuretic isn't helping much and he remains totally oxygen dependent; the vet said he collapsed when they took him out of the oxygen tent.

So dh is on his way there with favorite treats and we're 99.9% sure we're going to let him go peacefully in the oxygen tent unless something significant has happened in the last half hour. After seeing him struggle to breathe once, we're not going to do it again.

Very bizarre how this happened so fast. We knew there was something going on and were planning to call the vet this a.m., but he was in great spirits today (well, yesterday) and even took an afternoon walk with me & the kids. :sigh: Well, I guess that's a good thing.

aw TBF....I'm so sorry about Hogan   Isn't it strange that he waited until the new puppy was there to help you through his loss? So sorry but it sounds like he had a great quality of life right until the end. :candle:
