Thanks everyone! We have thought about a small basement ... mainly for storage, but also for safety. Current house is lovely, very open inside, but there is no safe room in the event of a tornado. We have the hall closet, which will fit two people standing up. But not two people, two dogs and a cat. So I would like either a reinforced interior room or a basement for that aspect, because we do get tornados, and occasionally a hurricane will take a path inland that brings it up over our area while it is still fairly strong, and the disintegration of the eyewall of a hurricane can spawn tornados. I *heart* those recycled glass tiles!!!! OMG they are so pretty!! Unfortunately, I don't have much in the way of interior design skills, so I will be scouring the Internet looking for examples of how to incorporate those into a backsplash or shower. Interesting that you mention the handicap-accessible option. I will look into that. The house design is fairly accessible as it is, with the main living areas on the ground floor. But I should think it would not be that much harder to make sure that all doorways are wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair, etc. My dad had a tough time getting around last year after he broke his leg; the master bedroom is upstairs, and my parents have a contemporary house with spiral staircase. That is next to impossible to navigate on crutches, and I won't consider having one in any house we build because of that, though I think they can look really neat. I'm all about spending more money now and putting in materials that last for a long time. I don't want to put in cheap stuff I'll have to spend more money to replace in 5-10 years. There are some things you can spend less on and that's fine, but others ... ugh, not so much! We also have parents who've built houses, so they will be a source of advice too, I'm sure (even if some or much of it will be unsolicited, LOL!). Keep it coming! |
