OK, I've referred to this site before when we've had a discussion about sewing and historical costuming and clothing for reenactments, etc... They usually have a "daily special" where they highlight one item and discount it...I HAD to share today's as I thought most of you would love to drool over this: http://recollections.biz/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=R&Product_Code=50475R&Category_Code=TodaysSpecial Now, as I have NO place to wear such a gown I'll refrain, but it's terrific eye candy and fantasy material!

I forgot to say..........that's Meryl Streep's wedding dress from OUT OF AFRICA.... YES, most of these clothes would be HOT...and it was SO HOT BACK THEN...HOW did they do it???? LOTS of Lemonade and shade...and of course NO WORKING....I'd be a Scarlett O'hara type...and have a nap in the afternoon....MY corset would POP OPEN as soon as the dress was unbuckled ...come to think of it...my figure is more like Mammy's... RICH OR POOR.....EITHER WAY....there was a TON OF CLOTHES for those ladies to wear....Thank goodness for the 20's and the "high" hems...HH

Headless, you know what's odd? I thought they'd be horrendously hot as well. BUT, the dresses were all COTTON, which BREATHES (unlike many of the modern fabrics that do not, so you end up stewing in your own juices)...AND, when you walk the long skirts and/or petticoats move the air all around your legs and up your body...air conditioning! And, as it gets up to 118 or so here, I've got the real test case scenario for these! I do not wear corsets with my long skirts or period clothing unless I'm at some special party for costuming or something. I actually wear several outfits here at home...just long skirts with blouses...kind of a modern Victorian thing! But, I was SO surprised that I was actually cooler wearing those clothes than some others that were "modern summer clothing" types. Anyway, the "boot length" works well here and I have photos of my grandmother who really WAS a "ranch wife" here in the desert in her clothing from the 1920's through the 1960's that she made...I noticed most all of her clothes are along similar cuts and in similar materials, most of which were cotton. I was so taken with two of her outfits that I created my own design for me and made as close to a duplicate of them as I could...amazingly comfy, practical AND cool! She was a smarty! OH! And, she made WONDERFUL ranch-style "split skirts" for riding (as she DID ride out with my grandad quite often on their ranch)--- she did not ride sidesaddle (nor do I...wish I knew how!) so she made her skirts so she could ride astride comfortably and be protected from sun/heat as much as possible. I'm in the midst of trying to do something along those lines as well. (Of course, my grandad would giggle at me using an English saddle to "ride the rails" but he'd be happy as long as I was on a horse! )But, yes, if you are in taffeta, silk, wool, etc, you'll roast. And, corsets are made of varying materials and in several different ways as well. I really lof that site you referred, Headless...another clothing addiction site ---is there a self help program for those of us who lof period clothing?!
