My sister used to have a big sheep doggy mutt who wasn't neutered until he was about 6. Her husband at the time didn't "believe" in neutering male dogs. (Might provide some insight into why he was a serial cheater . . .) Barney was never agressive, studdish, humpy, etc., and you could take him to any dog park and he would just stand by his people rather than say hello to or play with other dogs. But it was well nigh impossible to keep him from marking stuff in the house. Even after all that time being in tact, once he started living with my mother and her vet recommended that he be neutered, he stopped peeing in the house about a month after he was fixed.

I personally like to have boys neutered around 6 months. That way they don't start to lift their legs to mark things, instead they still pee like girls. I find they are much easier to take for walks since they don't want to pee on things or stop to sniff everywhere another dog peed. It seems that once they develop the peeing on stuff thing, it sticks with them even after they are neutered.
We had a dog in the other day who peed while doing a handstand - both back feet off the ground! The funniest thing ever.. :point:

We had Oliver neutered at 6 months. Certainly didn't affect his size! He is almost 90 lbs. which is huge for a poodle.

My neutered at 15 months dog still pees like a girl and the new puppy who will be 9 weeks old on Wednesday started lifting his leg today. :sigh: :teehee:

Hmm...I took this today:

and this is a couple weeks ago:

He's really docile and chill--he's the kid in school you totally expect is a pothead--only he's smart too-very obedient and well trained at just 4 months.

My mother who breeds german shepherds recommends 8-10 months.

I'm big on waiting until they are at least a year old for the bigger dogs. I neutered Tuli at a year and would have waited longer but he was cryptorchid so I didn't want to wait too long. But it also is dependent on the dog, the owner, and the situation. You have a well bred dog and are a responsible owner so you shouldn't have any issues with a maturing male, but others might. If I had a dog that was a little more dominant I'd maybe not wait as long, and if he is more mellow, a little longer. I don't think there is any one right answer, I just think it takes research and weighing the pros and cons of earlier versus later!

I spay or neuter as soon as they are done with their puppy vaccines, so about 4 months. It is easier on them when they are younger, incision is smaller, and they seem to bounce back quicker. If he were mine, they'd go now.

You summed it up nicely :) At least spaying isn't as complicated!

On a semi-related note, years ago in my "monthly newsletter" from my then vet, they introduced "prosthetical balls"--they were like breast implants for balls. I feel certain they were designed for wives of men who insisted their male dogs didn't get neutered out of some sort of fear projection--so that they could have it done and the hubby would never know :teehee:

They make them for cats, too! Saw this in a dog/cat magazine while waiting for my vet one day. They were called "Neuticles". :teehee:

Too bad my sister couldn't do this to her first husband as well as their dog. Would have saved a lot of headaches all around.
