With all of this to do BH2 will never see any of her relatives
Well, part of me wishes I had some time to spend without family obligations. One day to myself would be great. But I am expecting a wonderful time, forecast is great.

Yes indeed, the forecast is supposed to be wonderful and you'll be hitting the town at the absolute peak of the blossoms. I agree with others that you generally should stick to the Mall and the museums. At one end, right by the river, is the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial (my favorite memorial) is relatively close to that. The WWII Memorial, the Washington Monument are more in the middle of the Mall, and then all the varioius Smithsonian Museums and National Gallery are . If you have time, the Botanical Garden is near the Capitol, past the Hirschorn Museum. I'd skip the Spy Museum on this trip, since it takes you off the main drag + you could get up there and not be able to get a ticket, since this will be a prime tourist weekend.

For viewing the Cherry Blossoms, the Jefferson Memorial/Tidal Basin is the very best spot, as cherry trees ring the whole basin. You can walk over there easily from the WWII Memorial. And at that point you're not far from the Holocaust Memorial, which is on 14th Street, I "think" at D street. I haven't been yet, but the rest of my family has and said that it's really, really special. Emotionally draining but really worth the effort to go.

Parking will be difficult to find, so I would recommend taking METRO if possible. Have fun, and welcome!

If you have time and feel like shopping, I'd take a wander through Georgetown. Some chain stores, some eclectic little boutiques, a ton of history and all the old houses are extremely pretty. If the weather is going to be beautiful and you don't mind a crowd, go get a table at one of the Georgetown waterfront restaurants and have dinner and a drink on the patio overlooking the potomac.

If you're starving and around the mall area, there are alternatives to eating at one of the overpriced mall vendors. Sonoma on Capitol Hill is great, if you walk east of the Capitol on Pennsylvania avenue there's a couple of restaurants. A small hike, but can be worthwhile. Probably three minutes in a cab.

Smithsonian hours are 10am-5:30pm
National Gallery of Art is 10am-5pm Monday-Saturday, 11-6 on Sunday
The Memorials are 24 hours - if possible check them out at night too...its beautiful (I would recommend after 9pm when the majority of the school tours are gone)

Bus tours: (will most likely be PACKED with the Cherry Blossom Festival)
Old Town Trolley
Tourmobile
Open Top Sightseeing
DC Ducks (requires reservations)

Segway tours: (Very fun, but keep in mind you will not see the memorials on a Segway due to National Park Service rules)
Capital Segway
City Segway
Segs in the City

Can you tell I play tour guide alot?

Just got home from two absolutely gorgeous days in DC. The first day we did the mall and all the monuments. My brother and I toured the Air and Space while my sister and my Mom went to the Art Museum next door. We also went in to check out Julia Child's kitchen, which was well worth seeing. The museums were pretty tough because the crowds were :jaw: Someone working at our hotel said this was the most people to have been in DC since the Inaguration. I believe it, because the Cherry blossoms were in full bloom and were breathtaking. I have never seen so many people. We had dinner with all 26 in our group that night walking distance from our hotel, which was the Pentagon City Ritz. (yes, really.) I have a cousin that has been in the company for 20 years and she got us a great rate. The hotel alone was worth the trip!
The next day we did the bus tour of the city, but it didn't leave till noon, so my immediate family and I went to Arlington in the morning, which I loved. It's just a really moving experience, and I'm so glad I saw it. We chose the bus tour for later because we had elderly members in our group, and we wanted something we could all do together. The traffic was so slow that this wasn't a huge success, but it was a nice way for us to spend the day together and everyone could see all the sites. Plus, everyone's feet hurt from the day before!
We had dinner all together Saturday night at the Columbia Firehouse in Alexandria. We had the uppermost room to ourselves, which was wonderful. Food was perfect, many laughs and many :martini: :martini: 's. The most fun I have had in a very long time. <3 my family!

So all in all, a perfect weekend. I'm happy to be home though, because of course I missed Cocoa! :(

BH2 Soooo close, yet so far....

Sounds like you had a great time, and if I hadn't had two solid days of shipping the giant Marley Man out to my trainer and back for lessons, I would have just just shown up at the darn Columbia Firehouse after I got your message. Just to say hi! When in the heck are we going to finally coordinate our schedules better?

Glad you had fun!
