San Barbados or Bados, Bady, Beedle Bum, B or my Silly Old Bugger was humanely put to sleep under the shining spring sun yesterday afternoon at 3.15pm. It's the end of an era here at Talisman Farm. In his nearly thirty years, B had been a fit, healthy and athletic horse. As a young horse he was a formidable cross country machine - very hard to beat and, in his latter years he was a schoolmaster who taught a number of people the joys and adrenaline rush of eventing. He never stopped and he rarely took rails (only ever took one rail with me and that was completely my fault - I told him when to jump when he knew better - he always new better, especially when we were competing!). He was quirky and full of personality and a huge presence on the farm. Only completely retired from work a year ago, Bados has spent a number of years in his 'off season' being my 'nanny' mare and taking care of the foals at weaning time. He helped raise both of my stallions as well as every foal that has been born here in the last decade. He took his job incredibly seriously and was the most gentle and protective old man. 'His' babies all loved him and I will struggle to find another horse to fill that role as well as he filled it. Eventually time caught up with my darling old man and I noticed a couple of months ago that he was having some trouble getting around in his paddock. We managed him as best we could by putting him on the flat and giving him regular treatments and anti inflammatory medications and he improved quite dramatically. I had to separate him from his yearling mate however as they would play too rough and he really was no longer up to the rough stuff (he would beg to differ but this was one time when I really did know best). Yesterday morning when I was doing my daily rounds with the poo barrow I noticed him standing very strangely and, when I went into his paddock to ask him to move for me, he told me it was his time. I had been preparing for this moment as we knew his condition was irreversible but it never makes it any easier does it. We had a few last hours of lovely sunshine, lush spring grass, carrots and mare nuts (his favourites!) together and then I let him go. Bados, I will forever miss your startled expression, your soft whickerings, your gentle nudges and your extreme orangeness but you have left your hoof-print firmly embedded in my heart and I will never ever forget you, as long as I live. You were a great character, a one in a million mate and a total gentleman to the end. Love you Beedle bum, run free and, when you see him, be sure and give your wee mate Silas a good scratch on his wither from us. ![]() ![]() |
