Ok, so I apparently have lost my mind and decided to get braces. I had a retainer when I was a teen in Germany for my top teeth but they weren't doing the big braces there at that time. Fast forward 150 years and I decide it's time to get braces for my crooked bottom teeth. It's amazing what a wedding in the family does to normally fairly somewhat sane individuals... So, they are on. Hurting a bit but not too bad. It's only for 4 to 6 months so no biggy. Any of the TOC gang had braces as an adult? What should I avoid? What helped? Anything I should be aware of? |

Hey, go for it, BT! When I was in 6th grade or so, I lonnnnnnnged for braces and used to make them out of paperclips. I imagined they were a bit or bridle. Pretty sick, eh? Anyway, then I got them for real and it wasn't quite as much fun, especially when everything got tightened once a month. I had everything....retainers, rubber bands, headgear...you name it! Five years' worth. |

They say straight teeth make you healthier, while bad teeth can cause all sorts of unrelated problems. I say go for it! Do everything they tell you, the time will pass regardless, and this way you have the lovely straight teeth at the end. My SIL got hers done when she was about 35yrs. Rather painful I guess, but she was determined to have straight teeth. She thinks they were helpful in her career, better appearance, well worth the time, money and pain. Both her kids did their stint in braces too. My DD is just about ready to have her braces off, next week in fact. She has been very diligent about keeping them clean, enjoys the color changes she gets when the wires are replaced. We did the Ibeprofun the day before and for two days after. Helped a lot getting ready for the pain and new changes from a wire change. She is rather tough about pain, some kids take the meds longer after new wires. She also used the rubberbands almost all the time. Dr. said half day, either days or nights was fine. She wore them except when eating. Changed them every meal, said the bands got "tired" after being stretched and were not strong anymore. Dr. said she is several months ahead timewise, in tooth alignment, over his original estimate of needed wearing time. She should be getting a retainer after the next checkup. My family runs to pretty straight teeth not needing braces. Son only needed a retainer for about 6 months, teeth look very nice. But her dad's side has small mouths and the front teeth are rather crowded, so get crooked or bad bites. She had her wisdom teeth out at age 14. Teeth were still just buds so easier to remove than full-sized teeth. Younger age at removal means MUCH less damage possible with bone and nerves, faster recovery. Highly recommended now. She was much faster than older son in his larger wisdom tooth surgery and recovery time. Best of luck with your dental work. You will be very glad you had it done. Something you can still enjoy years from now!! |

Sigh - this would be me too, to a "t". I certainly got what I asked for! I stayed away from sticky stuff (gum, caramel, etc.) and developed the habit of checking my teeth for "visibles" at every opportunity. Ibuprofen was my friend. My former boss, with whom I still interact closely, is currently wearing braces on her upper teeth (she is 52). She will wear these for a few months and then move to the Invisalign device. She was a little self-conscious at first, especially regarding her (barely noticeable) change in speech pattern. She gave a 3-hour long presentation yesterday to our new owners and did a great job. She studiously avoided eating the sandwiches provided at lunch as she can't quite yet bite into things due to a little bit of soreness, and being paranoid about food being stuck in her teeth. Instead she enjoyed the fruit salad and a bottle of water. Edited by Twiceshy, Nov 6 2009, 08:30 AM.

I know a lady that had them put on and then removed 2 days later because she didn't like the way they looked! Talk about a waste of money! Her daughter rode at the barn and I think her mom just didn't have enough to do. I have a good friend who just finished the invisible braces and her teeth look good. You will be so glad to have the work finished and your teeth will look awesome! I suggest sleeping in your retainer most nights forever once they are removed to hold the new work. |

I say go for it. If you want your teeth straightened, get them straightened. I had braces for a bazillion years as a kid. I swear my formative years where either spent preparing to get braces (many extractions), in braces (5+ years) or in retainers. My bite wasn't horrible, but my bottom teeth were crowded and at right angles to each other. I had all manner of rubber bands and spend most of 8th grade not being able to open my mouth due to them. I only had to due neck gear and for a very short time so I was spared that particular humiliation. It was mostly worth it. I have pretty nice teeth although I have VERY short roots from having spend so much time in braces. I think these days they won't leave you in them that long but rather do two sets. I STILL have a permanent retainer behind the front 6 bottom teeth and I still wear my retainer most nights...so I haven't suffered from re-alignment that many people do. I do now have a space in the bottom fronts from an ornery almond. I swear the gap opened up in 3 days. I went to see about having it fixed and the ortho was an ASS* and I figured it would be bad for me to try to move the teeth more with the short roots, etc. *Had a run-in with him previously when the permanent retainer came off. I went in to get it replaced and he did a full consultation and was like 'I wouldn't recommed full braces. Your first ortho did a great job but I would've finished them a little different on the bottom' etc. I was like "I'm not here for full braces and my teeth don't need to be moved anymore, etc. I just need some cement for this damn thing, please." He proceeded to make a whole new retainer, put it in and then tell me to come back in 6 months. What he neglected to tell me was that he designed to new retainer to "finish the bottom teeth" they way he woud've if I had been his patient all along. Not knowing this, I didn't go it after 6 months (why should I have, all I went to him for was some cement). Turns out he crowded the bottom teeth the other way...one set back from the others and one tilted a little. It pisses me off to this day. Stupid arrogant orthodontist with a Napolean complex. My dentist sent me back to him, asking me to give him another try, when the almond incident occured. I tried to nicely discuss the situation and he wanted to do MORE moving and wouldn't just work on the area I wanted him to work on. He was all high and mighty and pulled some "I'm an artist and I can't compromise my profession because you don't have the same vision for your teeth as I do" bullshit. I don't hate many people...but I swear my face turns red anytime I think of that little punk. If there's a point to that rant it would be this: Be sure you and the orthodontist are on the same page. You're not a child and they should work WITH you to develop a plan for the improvement YOU would like to see, and that may not be an absolutely perfect set a teeth at this stage in life. BT, I had them as a young adult, just out of college. It was something, and I couldn't wait to get those effers off! Twiceshy's story rings true to me; I had to give presentations, etc. with the braces. I was especially wary of any bread, and spinach/broccoli!! I never missed an adjustment/rubber bands appointment, and as such had 'em off in 15 months. It was so worth it tho. I get compliments on my smile, and having straight teeth is one less thing to worry about in life, and that is a blessing! Like Kikki and Snacky said, plan on wearing a retainer in perpetuity. I wear mine every other night, top and bottom, and it's like an insurance policy. I've had my braces off for over 15 years! Gack, I'm OLD!! Plus, Mr. Corey94 loffs to give me crap when I'm talking to him with my retainer; he imitates my awkward lisp.... |
