Opinions? Thoughts? Likes? Dislikes?

I'm contemplating getting either a Kindle or Sony Reader for Mr. Indy for Christmas. His commute sucks and I think this would be a great thing for him to have, plus he likes electronic toys. I just can't decide which one. Sony is cheaper but I don't know if cheaper is better....

Oooh, I'm interested in this too. I had a Kindle, but my daughter broke it (note: do not drop said Kindle on tile floor - it doesn't bounce). Anyway, I was 2 months of out of warranty, so out of luck. For my birthday, DH bought me the Sony Reader. I know nothing about it. Zip. Nada. I don't even want to take it out of the box to look at it because if I do, they charge a 10% restocking fee. So, any input would be appreciated by me as well.

I can tell you that I liked the Kindle. Never found anything I wanted that wasn't on there. I also have an iphone and you can sync them and read your books on either the kindle or iphone, which is a huge plus for me. I had the 1st generation Kindle. I cannot for the life of me understand why it isn't backlit so you can read at night? Not sure if they fixed this in later models or not.

DH had a Sony Reader for about 2 days. He wasn't impressed and returned it so he could get a Nook, which he is impatiently awaiting. :)

You can get all the books for the Kindle on the Kindle for iPhone/iPod Touch. So if you're not tied to the Kindle interface (which is beautiful and glare-free but forces you to carry a big unitasker gadget), consider getting him an iPod Touch instead. I love having the flexibility of my Touch--I can read books, listen to audiobooks, listen to music, play games, etc. all on one little device.

Ooooh, I like the Nook. I like the music aspect of it (the Mr. is big on his music) and the book sharing is cool too.

(plus, nook is one of my favorite words)

What is the cost for the Kindle for iPod Touch? Other than the cost of the Touch itself?
Do you find the screen of the Touch is big enough for reading?

The Kindle app is free. Obviously you have to pay for the books (same price for those as for the Kindle Reader). Just like with the Kindle, you can download free sample chapters.

"Big enough for reading" is a personal opinion issue. I have no problem with it whatsoever. I thought I was going to prefer reading in landscape mode but I can actually read faster in portrait mode. You have to turn the page alot, but as your thumb is already right there because of the way you are holding the device, this presents no inconvenience. I have my Kindle App set to black screen with grey text, which really helps reduce eyestrain.

Onthe iPod Touch you can enlarge the print to any size you want/need by touching the screen with 2 finger and spreading them

This also works on the new MacBooks - spread finger to enlarge whats on the screen - cool feature

I've had a Sony Reader for over two years and love, love, love it. I will never go back to reading regular books again (too heavy, they smell, too hard to turn the pages :teehee: ). Of courrse, the best thing for me is that I buy books over the internet. Buying books in China is really hard and expensive, so I highly recommend the reader.

My husband has had a Kindle for about a year now and loves, loves, loves it. Much prefers it to reading "real books. " The Kindle is awesome, and in the US, you can buy a book anywhere you have wireless, anytime. I LOVE that. Here, not so useful, but we really do love them.

I have an i-Touch and I am one of those who would not be able to read a book on the screen. However, I download free audo books from my US library and (a) I listen to them while knitting and (b) we download children's books for the children to listen to (They have nanos) while traveling.

I am a Luddite who has learned to embrace technology.

Thank you, Miss Bri! Me too.

M3s, iPods...I haven't a clue. I've got a cell phone that jumps through hoops, but I only have it "just in case" or whatever....

These new things...they are to read books on? I'll have to look it up.

I'd like to curl up and have someone read to me without skipping any of the important stuff (which is what I do when I read to myself....that or fall asleep :teehee: ).
