Two thumbs up for this clinic - He gives a good riding lesson. I've done a couple with him and he will be at the farm the weekend before Thanksgiving. I'm looking forward to it! He has a good way about him, and focuses on back to basics good riding. Everyone who can should go! |

This clinic looks like it might be more "jumper" oriented. Is this correct?? Thanks! |

No, I think they just put that on there for ease of explanation. From what I've heard, there are some hunters, eventers, and jumpers signed up so far. So a good mixed bag. I'll be taking one of mine (and I am certainly NOT a jumper rider, LOL). |

Joe's clinics are focused on good basic riding, not focused on one particular discipline. Just good skills. The last clinic I did, I was the only one in my group (the advanced group) on a hunter - everyone else was on jr/ao jumpers and grand prix horses. We did a lot of drills on the flat and lots of gymnastics. The second day finished with lots of gymnastic type coursework. The only time not being on a jumper was a limitation was when he raised the jumps up for the very last course of the clinic. I did it at like 3'6" - 3'9" and then he raised them for the jumpers. His lessons are very much tailored to focusing on good basics, very accurate riding in terms of your horse responding WHEN you tell him something, and THINKING. We are having a clinic next weekend with him at the farm and all the groups have a mix of hunters, jumpers, and eq riders, both juniors and adults. |

I just went up and lessoned with him and had a friend ride my youngster and it was very helpful for both and consistent with what everyone says--he focuses on basics, nothing gimmicky. I think it would be a benefit to people from any jumping discipline--we were schooling over jumper style jumps, but it wasn't a "jumpery" lesson. I also find him, unlike George Morris, to be kinder when you make mistakes. ETA: I learned this riding with him as a child--don't forget your spurs and stick--even if you don't normally ride in them. He wants to see you riding with both. Edited by RHowell, Nov 20 2009, 06:52 AM.

Rachel you are right, he is much kinder than Morris. I have never cliniced with George, but I don't think I ever would. I audited a clinic of his and it was interesting and educational but he is SO unforgiving of even tiny mistakes. Fargis is not at all harsh or unduly cruel as long as you TRY HARD to follow instructions (he does lots of precise drills and gymnastics) and work to improve yourself. It seems the biggest things that get to him are people who don't listen to what he says, don't think, and are rough with the horses. Today was our first day and it was LOTS of fun! I am borrowing a cool horse for the weekend so it was a FUN day! I am really looking forward to tomorrow. I have most of all the sections on video so hopefully I can load some interesting parts on youtube this week for those who are interested in getting a feel for his style. |

Kikki, I'd love to see the video--also, if you could post some of the exercises you found helpful, that would be most appreciated! |

Will do! I'm working on getting the DVDs for a couple people done before they leave for this, that, or the other, but once I have some time to focus on personal stuff I'll upload some of the exercises and explain them a little! The focus of his clinic (and I think most of them), STRAIGHT tracks, PRECISE riding (in terms of doing things like transitions, lead changes, etc exactly where you want them), and think early! Seems simple, and when you just hear the exercises its like, oh ok, that's easy, but because they were supposed to be executed so precisely they were HARD! |
