One of my two foster puppies is confirmed to have Parvo. She's had the runs since she got here on Friday but this morning it was really bad and she seemed to not be her cheerful self. I took her to the shelter to get tested and it was positive. So I came home and picked up the other puppy and took them both to the vet. The other puppy seemed to be doing fine, but of course she has been exposed and they want to keep her under observation. Sigh. They are great little puppies and I hope they can pull through. This means no more puppies for a year as it is highly contagious and is all over my property around the house and in the garage. Pico has had all of his shots and is likely not in any danger. The puppies probably got it at the shelter as the shelter had it a few months ago and lost some puppies. None of the adult dogs has gotten sick but it looks like it is still not a safe place for puppies, no matter how careful they tried to be. That is why they asked me to foster, so hopefully they wouldn't get sick! Looks like it didn't work out as they had hoped. Jingle for the little puppy girls - they are so sweet and cuddly!

Don't know yet - I just dropped them off a couple hours ago. It can strike hard and fast and if you don't catch it in time they can die very quickly. For some reason, black and tan dogs (which is what these puppies are) seem to be more susceptible, according to some reading I've done. There is no *cure* for Parvo, just palliative treatment, most of which is IV fluids to keep them from getting dehydrated since they have so much vomiting and diarrhea. It is super super contagious although adult dogs who have been vaccinated don't usually get it. I've got to go scrub my garage floor and dog crate with bleach. It can stay in the environment for up to 9 months so no more puppies for me for a long while. I understand why they wanted to get the puppies out of the shelter, I just wish they had tested them first because my household could have been spared this major PITA. |

That stinks. Have they had any shots at all? If they've had a first round, that will help. I had a pup of mine get Parvo when I lived in Los Angeles and since he had his first shots about a week or two before he became sick, he had the runs for two days, but recovered quickly on just very wet rice and chicken. My Lilly pup and her litter mates had parvo at 4 weeks. I will try to find out what the shelter used to support them. |

I'm so sorry to hear about the pups! Parvo is hideous, definitely slows me down in getting a pup, infection rates are up in shelters this year. Many, many for the pups and you!!
