Oh man, I am so different than most of you. :teehee:

I LOVE greys. My heart-horse is a big fat grey(white) Holsteiner gelding and he had a dark grey mane and a black hind leg up to his stifle. He was like riding a marshmallow and had a personality and jump to die for. Man I miss that horse... :(

So, I'd take another big fat grey in a heartbeat. They steal my heart when they look like overgrown Thelwell ponies! Next would be a bit fat bay or liver chestnut with 4 stockings and a big blaze, or a star and snip.

I love fat necks and big bums. My horses have to look like overgrown ponies, and Skye sure fits that bill. I want them to make ME feel dainty! Otherwise, I really don't care about colour and not much about sex either so long as the mare isn't a complete cow.

My only other serious requirement is safety. I am a weenie and I DO NOT do stoppers. I will take a horse who jumps a 7 and will always jump over a horse who jumps a 10 with a spook any day. They have to have a good work ethic but not be stupid or testy/explosive. I like to know I am as safe as can be and not have to worry about random stop-drop shoulder-spin. Skye has been pretty much bomb proof (minus the water truck at horse shows lol) since a 3 year old and that, to me, is priceless.

Turn-ons:
- a well-mannered horse on the ground who stands politely for the vet/farrier and isn't an ass about the facts of life (clipping, mane pulling, bathing, etc.)
- a horse who's easy on its blankets ... I just realized that this year when I looked at all of Willow's turnouts from last year—they all look brand new still :cheer:
- a horse who is generous under saddle and tolerates mistakes from the rider with equanimity
- a horse with a personality (that's not obnoxious)
- the dark dapple grays whose coats look like stars in a night sky <3

Turnoffs:
- MOUTHY GELDINGS. I hate them! They get the smack bottom. :censored: (Non-mouthy geldings are just fine though.)
- horses who do not respect your space :mallet:
- horses who are asses about the trailer/traveling (not scared, just asses!)
- horses who have learned to duck out at jumps
- really hot horses whose preservation instinct isn't always working
- horses who require a really strong push ride
- really herd-bound horses :argh:
- the really big horses who look and feel like elephants galumphing around
- a no-mane, string-tail Appy
- chestnuts (I know a good horse is never a bad color, but I'm just not a fan of chestnuts. I know that's stupid!)
- really thick manes that take forever and a day to pull properly

OMG Onelanderode did you never ride Dan?? That is one chestnut you would have loved. PS your new avatar is lovely!!!!

JTM my sentiments are exactly the same as yours regarding safety and brains.

Truth be told, I like a pretty horse. But I will take an ugly horse with a great brain any day of the week....

No, FG, unfortunately Dan was before my time ... it's often said what a lovely horse he was though. ;)

The new avatar pic came from a series of pics that my BM/EqT's working student took the very first time EqT rode Willow. I could not be there, but the pictures are so telling! She has come so far.

I would take an ugly, sensible horse over a pretty, stupid one any day too. The older I get, the less brave I am.

I love a horse with a bit of quirkiness or attitude. I have no idea why. I just love animals with a very distinct personality.

I never thought I was a mare person until I realized that all the horses I'd clicked with over the years were mares.

I don't like grays... they're a pain to keep clean, and the thought of melanomas scare me.

I'm a sucker for horses who beg. Yes, I know this is bad. As long as they're not mouthy or rude, my inner 12yo kid thinks it's cute. Bria has perfected the art of standing politely in the crossties and looking like a starved and unloved horse. It works every time.... oiy....

I have a real thing for a buckskin paint.

Lovely head shot, OLR.

Even with my experiences with Show, I'd still have to pick pretty. :shoot: More likely, however, is that I would wait until I found pretty and sensible in the same package.

I'm still hoping Elf is sensible and I think he's a conformationally pretty horse (he's put together well, IMO)...too bad he's a chestnut with minimal (and funky at that) white :innocent:

Haha, you sound like me. Even after dealing with the 'pretty one' for almost 6yrs. and getting no where under saddle (although he was an ANGEL last weekend for this dead beginner that was on him, I was amazed), I'd still probably pick looks over other certain things. But I agree, whenever I get another horse I'm going to have to wait til I find pretty and bombproof in the same package :innocent:

What an interesting topic. For me personally (not necessarily the same criteria we use to buy a sales horse) I love dappled anything, minimally marked pintos and palominos the best.

I do not do well with a horse I have to kick at all
I hate mouthy geldings
I like a horse that can take a joke

I will always take a mare over a gelding for a number of reasons... 1st is that we have 3 lame "lifers" in fields that are all geldings (one is only 8!) 2nd - a good mare is the BEST.. they will give you 110% if you "ask"

I am OK with cribbing and windsucking but HATE wood chewers.

No bad loaders

No bolters

No dirty stoppers

No mean bones

"Sure doesn't LOOK like an ASB."

I don't like liver chestnuts. There actually is something vaguely resembling a good reason for this... Or at least a good backstory... I had been out of Saddlebreds for like 20 years and the first show I went to spectate at down here in Georgia after that time, LITERALLY the entire horse show was nothing but liver chestnut ASBs. And I mean NOTHING but liver chestnuts. I was kinda horrified, mentally shrieking "What have they DONE to this beautiful breed? Where are all the pretty colors? Who wants to show a Saddlebred the color of MUD?" Came to find out, of course, that all the ASBs at the show were from the same big breeder and out of the same Big Name Liver Chestnut Sire, or one of his liver chestnut offspring...

The ASB biz is weird, b/c colors DO tend to trend, and once the breeders find that a color is trending, they will breed for that color. Bays are wicked hot right now - I wanted one for years and couldn't find one - now there are tons and I do wish I had one. But I'm lucky that Quattro is a nice, oldskool FIRE ENGINE RED chestnut of the Beau Fortune variety... which is my second choice. :)

I like every color! I'm not a huge fan of big white markings on my horses.

I guess if there was a #1 factor I want--I love puppy dog eyes the most. They just melt the heart and usually have a disposition to match.

And I wouldn't want to own one that goes around the ring with it's ears pinned. I don't care how great they jump -- if the ears are flat back I think it's just not a pretty picture.
Not that he's a great jumper or anything, but Orion goes around with his ears pinned, especially if other horses are in the ring with him. I wish he'd put those damn ears forward, but I accept that he's a grumpy old man. Given the choice to have his ears turned around in an otherwise awesome photo, I had them left back, because that's just who he is. :teehee:

He's also quite flat when it comes affect. I think I'm his favorite person, but you'd hardly know it. He does watch me intently (doesn't with anyone else) and lets me fuss on him even though it's not his thing. He will walk to me in pasture and even nickers to me now...although I think that has more to do with being in pasture with Show who is always excited to see me....and possibly the carrot bribes I've been giving him for months. :innocent:
Snacky -- re: the ears, I was thinking only with respect to a horse that I would want to own and show in the hunters. There are plenty of great, useful horses worth their weight in gold that make faces or pin their ears. But if I were buying one to show, a cute expression goes a long way with me. My horse is a pretty average mover but usually got a good prize in the hack b/c he always had his ears pricked and looked so pleasant, even when other horses crawled up his bum. :)
Gunnar tended to jump with his ears back. Like a radar he pricked his ears approaching the jump but it seemed the effort made him put them back. He did very well in the hunters, a plain bay huge QH with pig eyes and a short tale when I bought him. A plain btown wrapper he was:

In that picture he had his ears paintd forward. Before digital photography! This picture was in the COTH when he was year end AA hunter champ in 1997! Loved that horse with all my heart!

Bodie comes to mind when on this topic. Pretty as he is the spook in him is unnerving. Hard to find people to ride him.

But lucky for me I have flashy good minded Rosie to sooth my need for pretty. Not all may agree but most do! Everyone loves Rosie!
