I agree with y'all about the personality - I love a horse with a good personality! Woody is very interactive but really never goes too far as to get pushy. I let him get away with things I'd never let a horse do because it never escalates. He is just a good boy and loves to be social. So while no personality is NOT a deal breaker to buy, the reason I'll have Woody for the rest of his life is because he has a great personality. I could have sold him numerous times but I'm just not going to because I really LIKE being around him and he is kind and tolerates my very non horsey mom. You can always find a nice show horse (particularly if you have money to spend) but those who are good show horses AND have a great personality are harder to come by!

Clyde's personality is the main reason I've kept him around for almost 6yrs. even though I haven't ridden him for most of those years  :innocent: We totally click on the ground and I just LOVE him because he's so personable and in your (well, my, he takes awhile to warm up to strangers) pocket.

Kady...I wished we lived closer together! Clyde sounds like something I'd really enjoy, although I may be a bit too big for him.

I have an aversion to greys due to bad melanoma experiences and I prefer minimal bling, but am otherwise quite open. Anyone who has seen my horses would say that I discriminate against anything that isn't a bay!

  I haven't posted in awhile but decided to chime in.... I love a gray, don't know why but every horse I have shown for the most part was a gray. I just gravitate to them. However, I now own a bay with a Blue eye and huge white blaze and socks. I understand everyones objection to the blue eye, and heck I wouldn't own one if I didn't just acquire him one day. I hate a blue eyed horse with white around the eye or pink. My boy has dark all the way around, just its blue. Every where I show him, people always remember him. Hmmmm that could be good...or bad. LOL I Hate chestnuts. Don't know what it is. And no mares for me. They just always seem to be the moodiest. Other then that I'm not too picky especially if they move and jump well.
Heres what his blue eye looks like...

Im probably the only person who can say Im not much for personality. I really dont want it to need to be my best friend. It should stand happily and quietly while I brush and tack and not need a treat every five seconds. I dont mind walking to get it out of the field cause it doesnt come running to the fence when it see's me.

Im not much on gray, been that, done that, for WAY to long. I enjoy solid with no chrome, less to wash. I prefer to not own a chestnut, but wouldnt turn a nice one down. I dont mind apps or pintos.

I dont mind a cribber. We have hot wire on the fence, so no chewing there. We have a stall set up for my old mare who cribbed, everything is crib proof. Usually you can buy a really nice horse for mega cheap cause it cribs and no one else wants it.

I dont do kickers or biters.

Will NOT deal with ANY MORE stifle problems. Dont care how nice it is. I swear every horse Ive owned has stifle problems. :mallet:

Must tie. I had two horses that wouldnt tie. Im over it.

So what do I currently own: A cranky, kicking, biting, pushy mare. and an almost all white paint that is in your pocket personality kind of guy.

See, that's the kind of blue eye(s) I CAN do. That's really striking, IMO.

I think my reason for liking a lot of white on a horse (other than the typical 'Ooh pretty') is because I actually enjoy the grooming/clipping part of owning a horse more than I do riding. That's probably because since I have Mr. Clyde, and we don't get along u/s, all I could do (and enjoy) WAS groom him. So I developed a real liking of it. I just went out yesterday to see him & all I did was pull his mane and clipped his socks up, and I was quite happy with myself :teehee:

I want the pet too. My a/o horse was a business man and it got old. He was talented, but only wanted to do his job and be left alone. I want to bond! :teehee:

Greys are a deal breaker because I don't like the way they smell when they are wet. I also had a bad experience with exploding melanomas on a young(er) horse and that was heart breaking.

I like white chrome on any color. I saw a beautiful horse at the show last weekend. He was a darker chestnut with huge dapples, white socks and a white belly spot. Super fancy and eye catching.

Connor is a true black with white blaze and 2 white socks. I want him to be shinier and then I think I will really like his color (I already adore everything else about him).

Other deal breakers: Loud paints, dirty looking greys (hate that!), rat tails, bad feet, bad travelers, dirty stoppers, and mean snarkiness.

I don't mind buckers (as long as it is not mean). Spookiness doesn't bother me either, but no rearers. I will get off and not get back on.

Wow, I didn't know about the grey thing. Had grey ponies when the kids were growing up, but luckily no melanomas. Interesting advice. My pet peeve is a creepy, asymmetrical blaze. I also don't think I like that Rabicano thing, skunk tail, roaning in the flanks, that sort of thing. Also, I don't like the belly spots on the flashy horses - what's that called? Sabino? I do like chrome, but too much is TOO MUCH.

Thanks. Everytime I look at Coco I just keep telling myself dealing with her on the ground is worth it lol. Im come to terms with the fact that I will end up owning her for the rest of her life cause no one else is going to want to deal with it.

Justins attitude wins out about everything else. I can hop on him bareback with a halter and leadrope and ride him around the farm. He can stall next to mares and not care. He is turned out with a gelding, and they are best of friends. No stud chain to lead him. I joke with my mom that Im just going to ride and show him, and be done with all the others. I am not to big for my pony :teehee:

I can deal with just about any color, but grays are a pain due to the cleaning and melanoma thing. But I wouldn't refuse to look at a horse because of color.

I'm a sucker for bays, or for any solid colored horse with one high front sock. Yeah, I'm weird that way. If I were drawing my perfect horse, he (yes, a gelding) would be bright bay with a blaze (or a star/snip)and the front sock. It's striking enough to stand out, but you dont have to scrub all four feet. :teehee:

If course, Rudy is a bright copper chestnut with a blaze and two hind socks, and I still think he's handsome as all get out, even if he does move like a grape stomper.

I've owned many ponies and horses over the years but when I bought Sky a couple of months ago she was the first grey I've ever owned. Somehow, not particularly by design, I've only ever owned bays and chestnuts prior to her purchase. I have a retirement farm with lots of greys on it, and some have melanomas and some don't. I've been through the melanoma thing with a chestnut so I guess in my experience anyway avoiding a color won't avoid that problem! I don't really buy horses based on personality (as long as they aren't out to kill you) or looks. I will admit that I love bay, black and chestnut horses (especially liver chestnuts) with bling. But I also currently own a fairly plain bay these days, she has an anklet and a little white on her face and that is it. I also don't buy based on a horse having to be 'the one' from the moment I lay eyes on it. At least for me I've learned over the years that many horses can move into that spot over time.

I don't like bald faces but if it was a nice horse that I could ride well that certainly wouldn't stop me from buying it. I will now get roasted for my breed bias but I've yet to meet an Appy that I liked. I've met some cross-bred appy's that I liked but never a full appy. I don't tend to like their looks, personality or abliities (in regards to what I want a horse for anyway). That said, if I went and tried an appy tomorrow and it fit the bill for what I was looking for then breed would not stop me from buying either - and I'll bet I could learn to think an appy with a blanket was a very attractive horse!

I am also one of the odd people that prefers mares. I strongly prefer mares! If all things are equal between two horses and one is a mare and one is a gelding I will pick the mare every time. Again though, I've owned several geldings and a good horse is a good horse.

I think most sellers like dealing with me because I know what I am looking for as far as training, conformation and ability, and I don't get hung up on personality and looks. I think this is why horse shopping isn't the exhaustive process for me that it is for some people - I've never come even remotely close to needing to do a year or longer search for a horse but I know many people do. I've had ponies, hunters, jumpers, eq horses, etc. and I've always been able to find what I wanted in a reasonable (to me) time frame.

There are complete deal breakers for me though: rearing, bolting, mean buckers are all out, period. Nasty ground manners are out as well. I've owned cribbers and although I would obviously prefer that a horse not crib that isn't a deal breaker for me.
