Apparently "my" horse was picked up this morning from the lessee and then returned back to his trainer's barn, where a 2nd horse was going to join him and they were both coming to my trainers barn -- one for me to try and another one for someone else to try (and vice versa....apparently both of us are looking for similar horses although not sure of all the details...)

Trainer takes [my] horse off the trailer to look him over before sending him to us and he has pulled a shoe half off and is standing on the nails. So they are not sending him and have farrier attending to him at present; not sure of the outcome but I believe he has a puncture. Only horse #2 is on his way at the moment and of course................he's chestnut.

So my trainer just called to break the news. She still wants me to try horse #2 since he's coming and why not, but she can't believe my bad luck. And of course you know I have only ONE condition...not chestnut. Other than that I'm reeeeeally flexible. :mallet: :argh:

Horse #1 will either spend the month with his trainer and come next month, or if his shoeing is repaired and horse deemed sound...maybe he will come sooner. My trainer is not at all interested in getting him any time soon because "why should we pay to have him stand around for a month?" if he has an abscess.

I'm so bummed. The other trainer thinks I'll never believe the story....but it's so stupid it's probably true. :brickwall: :lonely:

GOOD GOD!!!!!!!

You are right, you couldn't make that story up!

Probably best for him to stay put, as your trainer said. My friend's mare did the exact same thing this summer and she ended up abscessing. She was out of commission for awhile. Hopefully your guy is just find, but yeah, definitely let him heal on SOMEONE ELSE'S dollar!

The only thing I can say, is if it is meant to be.... it will happen. I really and truly believe the right horses find us, at the right times.

Who knows, maybe you will end up liking the chestnut? ;)

Bummer about the other horse but let me go ahead and get it out there-- the right horse is never the wrong color. Especially when you're looking for a FAMILY SAFE horse on a budget. They're not always easy to come by.

The "no chestnut" rule is being implemented by my non-horsey husband. We have two chestnut horses here and he doesn't want a 3rd. I am generally indifferent as to color although I would *like* a horse of another color just for a change...and I agree that a good horse is never a bad color.

But I'm trying to be a good sport...he doesn't ride, doesn't like horses, but is very supportive of our [my] hobby including putting in a riding arena, and getting new fencing, and a new barn roof, and now buying another horse and all of us still taking lessons elsewhere, etc. etc. He just wants to have a different color.

I'll admit....it seemed like an easy enough requirement at first. It really is surprising how many chestnut horses are for sale!!

Aside from that *one* thing (ok, two things...he doesn't want a horse with blue eyes, either)...I really don't have many requirements -- I'll take a mare or a gelding, am not too particular about size, not very particular about age, don't care about breed, don't need "chrome", etc.... :sigh:

I'm going to ride the other horse tomorrow but I'm not getting too excited. I don't believe that the other buyer is looking for a "kid safe" horse, so while this horse might be just that, it wasn't brought in for kids so it may not be what we are looking for. But since he'll just be hanging around, I'll check him out.

I like chestnut actually. I don't like grey horses but I would buy one anyway if it were otherwise a good horse.

My dh initially suggested that we get something "cool" to look at -- a loud paint, appy, buckskin. I have convinced him that this would seriously limit our pool of possible horses so he revised it to be "just not chestnut". I didn't think it would be very hard!

Hey, TBF, I'm guessing it is your mares' 'tude that has turned your hubby off of chestnuts. While it does seem silly to rule out certain colors, I will be honest.... after dealing with one particular dark bay that tried to kill me on a daily basis, I will never. own. another. one. LOL.

Not sure I'll have another grey either (despite having owned 2 and leased 1), the melanomas and sarcoids have been tough to deal with in Win's case.

You poor thing! I know your pain. When we found Woody over in Europe we thought check would clear, horse would arrive (well technically the money was in escrow) but we kept getting one story after the next why he wasn't being shipped and he was always going to be in the states in a couple days. Well 5 weeks later the horse makes it to us. Farrier looks at it a couple days later and says the horse must have had a HUGE abscess and that's why they didn't send him. Quite frankly, I don't know what I would have done if the horse had gotten off the van late at night on three legs. I would have been REALLY freaked out! So I'm glad they didn't send him. But I'm not sure why they couldn't just tell me. Good luck on the shopping - its not easy!

Are you beginning to hate horse shopping? I despise it, just because of things like this. I'm so sorry that your horse didn't arrive. That is such a bummer. :shoot:

Yeah, so far it hasn't actually been fun. Not only have I not seen or heard of too many great prospects, but now this. I really, really want to end up with a horse that *someone* I trust knows something about...either a local horse that we can check on or know of, or something like this where someone "we" trust has known the horse. :(

Kikki, I would have been a complete basket case if I were you. I wonder if they thought you'd cancel the sale? I can't imagine why (over an abscess) but I would have been freaked out not knowing where he was!

Flash, my dh doesn't dislke chestnuts. He just wants something different. Too boring to look at 3 chestnut horse out the window, I guess. Like I said, I didn't think it would be a big deal to say "sure, no chestnut horses". :brickwall: In the end, I'm sure he'll cave if we really find a great one, but a nice bay seemed like it would be really easy to find. :sigh:

Ah yes, my hubby was "No white on my horse" - thank goodness Gunner was all bay!!! (And with a newbie rider caretaker 'tude preloaded, bless his huge horsey heart!)

Good luck, TBF
