Is the meadow on fire?

Back in the day, the smaller ring ran in a north/south position, I think by the barns, and the main ring was to the right and perpendicular to the smaller ring, going east/west. The outside course was in a big field behind the main ring. They didn't have any permanent jumps out there like a grob -- it was just regular show jumps set up in the field, with temporary snow fencing put up to mark off where the outside course ended and the trailer parking began. Back then they held A and B shows, but they were all one-day shows (as were alot of A shows back then) so we all trailered in. |

My former A/O hunter HATED the indoor at Chagrin. I don't think I ever made it around a course there without some sort of blow up. |

Delia - I think the outside ring that you are referring to is now a housing development. |

My former amateur horse hated the Barracks. Loathed and despised it. Meanwhile, he LOVED Culpeper. Go figure. |

Yes, sadly, based on what you've described-- I think Woodedge doesn't even one the piece of land where the outdoor course used to be

It seems to take a lot for a horse to like that ring. Its dark and has light spots and the ventilation fan has teeth. It is pretty darn warm in the winter though, inside at least. |

See...I've been wondering if I imagined that these days. While I rarely showed as a kid, my barn went to quite a few and I remember even the one-days as A rated, but you know how the mind plays tricks. I thought I was having a 'tall-tales' of horse shows back in the day. Thanks for confirming that I am not making it up. |

Too bad, but I'm not surprised. I mean, even the USET Headquarters at Gladstone has sold off property to developers. |

My horse hates anywhere that has nearby cows. He's absolutely positive the cows are Subversive Evildoers. |

So its not a "big show" place, but we did some smaller shows at Chateau Elan (near Atlanta). I hate it. My horse hates it. I hated it for my horse. Who's brilliant idea was it to have stables up a STEEP SLIPPERY SLOPE COVERED IN ROCKS from the ring. EVERYTIME I walked to or from the ring, I had to get off my horse, and even then, either I almost busted my a$$ or my horse did. |

It's been a looong time ago, but the original Sing Mia Song hated indoors--and she absolutely despised the ring at Sabbath Day which is now Evenstride, in Byfield, Mass. Whoever talked about the Barracks' ventilation fan having teeth, well, this fan was a bona fide piranha in her book! Forget hacking her in there, it was just a tense, miserable experience. |

Oh God, my first OTTB was so picky about venues it was just insane. Like Sing Mia Song, he HATED indoors of any variety - was convinced he was going to bump his head on the ceiling if he jumped, so his whole jumping style would change indoors. Another venue - and this is WAY back when - that he hated was Oulde Newbury, an "A" show on the marshes in Newburyport, Mass. I don't know if it was the footing or the sea air or the tents or the taste of the water or what, but he morphed into OTTB From H8ll and put me on the ground EVERY single day at that show. Sometimes I couldn't even get him to the ring. He just hated it. In his defense, he did eventually step up and give me a desperately needed Maclay win there, but only after I tearfully visited his stall in the middle of the night and promised him if he won it he never needed to go back there! He was always so tough to load, but at Oulde Newbury he would literally drag me to the trailer and leap aboard! Such a weird old horse.

Word. I won't show there. And one of the very best things about having moved up here to Chatt. is that nobody's going to ASK me to, either!! You forgot the flooded, soaking wet stalls when it rains... |

My horse is funny about indoors and has it in him to be a real goofball the first time he's in a new one. He's gotten better, but the Coliseum at the PG County Equestrian Center is most emphatically not his friend. He does not like it, he does not want to like it, he does not want to give it a chance, and yes he is certain. It's not even the people--he likes the people--it's the back left corner of the ring. Watch Capital Challenge and watch where the horses are all spooking. You'll see what I mean. |
