Not sure where to post this so I hope I found the right area. My TB can NOT be clipped so we start blanketing very early and hope for low hair growth. He is already in his baker blanket. Last year was the first year he got what I call a pressure rub on his withers. The hair eventually came off and over the summer new growth and his mane grew back. That spot just in the front of his wither. Well I noticed last night it has already started. It's only Oct. We have a LONG way to go to get to May when usually we are done with any pajamas. I am trying to decide what I can do to help him. I was thinking perhaps a towel on his wither, put on the clothes and fold the towel back. However if it is caused by pressure wouldn't that make it worse? I was wondering you wonderful folks have any suggestions? |

I find that a different cut of blanket sometimes works well. Some of the Rambos and Rhinos have a higher cut up the neck over the withers and that seems to relieve the pressure. Another thing I do for my guys is to put a "bra" on underneath -- Slinkys or Wunderwear are two types. Good luck! |

Ditto on the slinky "bra" (otherwise known as a shoulder guard). |

Different blanket. Get one with a higher neck. I personally cant stand the way the baker blankets fit. Way to big in the neck. There are plenty of decently priced higher neck blankets. Sstack.com has great ones with warranties. You can put him under lights too to decrease hair growth. |

Another baker blanket hater here. I like wunderwear but regardless of having hair not being rubbed the blanket is still not fitting right so I think you should get a different blanket. Triple crown/weatherbetta/schienders all make blankets that fit that body style of horse best. |

A Weatherbeeta did that to my horse. In addition to the hair loss, which grew back white, it made him really tight through his shoulders. Ever since I've had him in Rambos, Rhinos and Amigos (all by the same manufacturer, so they have the same cut). I have had zero problems with them. As others have said, the blanket sits well in front of the whithers, so you don't have the pressure point issue. FWIW, I just bought an Amigo heavy weight turnout with detachable hood for $170. The Amigo isn't quite as sturdy as the more expensive Rambo (almost double the price), but if your horse isn't hard on his blankets then it should hold up fine. And the waterproofing is excellent. |

Unfortunately new blankets are out of the question $$$ or lack of. I don't think it is the baker, I think it is his sheet. I have 2 one is a little small I think that is the main culprit, I use it when I need to wash his other sheet. I have a friend who has a bigger one (second hand) I may see how it fits and buy it off her. He wears an 82, it's an 84. My experience with slinkys was HORRIBLE rubs and sores. I never used one again. It did the opposite of what it was supposed to do. I think because it got cooler earlier than usual we have earlier issues. I am just concerned because by winter he will have on a sheet, baker, integrity blanket, topped with a nylon sheet. We have a newmarket rug to add if it gets REALLY cold. I don't want his withers to get so sore I can't ride him. I may talk to my western pleasure friends again about slinky's that may be a less expensive approach. |

OK_this is what I have done for my blanket customers with this problem. I make a cutback in the blanket at the withers...in about 3 inches ( or past the point of hair rub) and wide enough in a half circle to clear his wither bone on both sides. Then cover the cutback with fleece. If you have a blanket repair service near you ask them for a price. I can send you a scrap of fleece and a handsewing needle and thread if you think you can do it yourself...

4 blankets on one horse is going to restrict his range of motion, and will rub, pretty much guaranteed. Schneiders blankets are cheap and really good, with a long good warranty. Like $120. Think about you trying to wear a tshirt, a long sleeve shirt, a sweater, and a jacket, and then add some suspenders between your legs. Not fun. You may not be able to afford it right now, but start putting $30 out of each paycheck and you will have him a nice warm fitted blanket by actual winter time. |

I agree...that's a LOT of blankets to have to wear. I'd save so I could buy something that would cut down on the layers. |

I really dislike Bakers too. Too big a neck and too narrow a shoulder for me equals rubs. I have found on most TBs a blanket with cutback withers like macmtn recommended is often the way to go. If you can, I'd keep him under lights until around 1000 at night and feed him all the hay he can stomach at night and put fewer clothes on him - horses can do a remarkable job of maintaining their body heat by digesting hay so if he gets a hair cold, all he needs to do is eat some more. |
