So a dear friend of mine is helping to choose a saddle her niece, who is 8 years old, VERY tall for her age, beginner, and riding a large pony (lesson pony). Child's mom knows nothing of horses at all and really leans on my friend for advice. The trainer is ok, but her advice isn't always what we would agree with. Anyhow, after sitting the kid in a few saddles and looking at tons of them, she has two saddles that are potentials for the kid. Once is a Pessoa Rodrigo Pony in really good condition (for $450) and the other is a Beval Ltd Pony that is in really good condition (for $800). They don't want to spend much money (they really can't, particularly on a first saddle) but want to get something appropriate for the kid. She will likely outgrow the saddle within a year and need to go up to a full size adult saddle but right now they are just too big for her. Both saddles are a good fit for her. So, anyone have any experience with either of these saddles?

My dd rides in the Pessoa Pony saddle and loves it; the trainer loves it. When we were searching, it sounded like people were love it or hate it with the Pessoa Pony, but I think it all comes down to fit. If it doesn't fit the kid, they will hate it. I can't speak for the Beval but I can say that the Pessoa can probably be resold for $450 if she takes care of it (what size....I'll be in the market for another pony saddle in a year....!) ;)

A lot of kids ride in the Pessoa. I could not find one when I was buying my pony saddle, so I ended up with a Beval Devon XW. It fits the pony and rider well.

Honestly, I don't think you will have a problem with resale on either, but I'd go for the Pessoa if it fits pony/rider because it's cheaper!

I have a pessoa pony saddle that is just sitting in my guest room collecting dust. It belongs to a friend of mine and I was suppose to sell it online for her but never got around to it. :sigh:

I can take some pics if you're interested.

What size is it?? I looked for MONTHS to find anything in 15" and ended up buying here on TOC....but it was surprisingly difficult!

It's got to be a 15 or 15.5

I'll measure and snap a picture tonight.

Go with the Pessoa. That's a good deal on it. They are also really easy to resell when you are finished, and most likely for the exact same money she buys it for.

Thanks for all the advice y'all! I think she is sending the Pessoa to them tomorrow with one of our trainers who is going over near there to horse shop so they can see if it fits the kid. I told her I thought she could sell if for what she paid for it and so it was the better deal if it would work. The hard thing is that the kid is really tall and is going to quickly need more flap on the saddle but there are just few options for really long legged kids in pony saddles. Right now a 16" adult saddle is just too big but probably not long from now would work (maybe a year?) so I think they would like to get her the Pessoa because its a good price on the saddle and will hold its value and then when she outgrows it (probably not long from now!) then hopefully they will have a better grasp on HOW she will grow and can get her a much nicer adult saddle.

Thanks again y'all!

If I measured correctly, I'd say it's a 15"

Has some wear on the flaps but over-all looks to be in pretty good condition.

I paid $450 for a similar saddle in pristine condition, so probably somewhat less than that, depending on your market....or you could put $425 OBO on it.

Trying to decide if I really need two 15s or not....my younger dd is in a 14" but I think it looks small...hard to say whether older dd will grow out of her 15" before younger dd exceeds her 14". Personally I think I have a saddle shopping obsession now. I know someone else on this board who might be interested in a 15"....let me ask her as well. :)

I love love love the Bevals for what its worth.

I would find a saddle that fits very close to the pony. I find the biggest problem with kids saddles is they have a tendency to sit up on top of the pony, which makes the kid less secure.

My 14" is a really, really old and not in great shape flat Crosby. If you recall I bought the 15" Pessoa and the not actually 15" Ian Miller (is either 15.5" or 16" depending on who measures.) The 14" seems really small. My kids are tiny but even still it seems small....(it's my 11.5 year old that is in the 15" Pessoa!)
