Was going through some old stuff and came across videos of when I first started doing reining. Of course I cant find anything recent for comparison. :duh:

The horse is my moms that she lets me ride. He is decent at it, but doesnt really have the get up and go drive to be a really good reining horse. This is more my moms thing, I just go along for the fun.

I grew up riding with one hand :) I grew up (well, until I was 12) in Florida, before it was big bad hunter horse land and it was all western. Moved to Virginia and no one rode western. So I started taking hunt seat lessons. My mom enjoys western more, though we refuse to have any 'good' show western pleasure horses cause we dont enjoy the incredibly slow peanut rolling western pleasure stuff. We mostly show performance and trail and I do horsemanship.

It takes a lot to keep him looking like My Pretty Pony. He is VERY special. If my mom didnt own him, he would be dead by now. He is a complete freak about everything. My mom is the only one who can do anything with him. I can ride him and lead him, but thats it. She has to tack him up, clip him, bathe him, put his blanket on and off, feed him, etc. He has a major screw loose.

We were joking last weekend that we were going to rename the farm Misfit Farms. :sigh:

I took reining lessons a few years ago and absolutely loved it.

I often consider getting into it serisouly.

It's dressage at mach speeds.

OI, what a cool video! You look great on that horse, and you both seem to know what you're doing. Does your mom still have him, do they compete? You are quite versatile, OI!!!

She does still have him. He will never leave us.

I attempt to try out as many different aspects of horses as I can. There are so many different ways to enjoy them; why not try it all?

I like that attitude. I want to learn how to drive and ride western. Do they have to be registered quarter horses or breeds to do reining? We have a girl at the barn who is training a reining horse right now. The fancy pants dressage horses sure get bug eyed when she slides to a stop.

There is AQHA reining, NRHA reining, APHA reining, I believe App registry reining, and sometimes you can find open reining classes. We do AHQA and NRHA.

Ive done some driving and use to have the best little shetland pony that would drive. Ive driven a 4 horse draft hitch too :cheer: That was a lot of fun.

My mom was the 4H leader for many many years and I stayed in until I aged out. She tried to make sure we knew everything we could learn and do so many different aspects of it. Hunters is my passion, but I do enjoy doing other things as well.

Most reining people are very open and friendly. We ride with a guy about an hour away from us, and the people there are the best. Everyone plays on each others horses. They have little fun play days where everyone does patterns and critiques each other. When we show, everyone cheers for every one else, even people from other barns. Its sooo relaxed. At the end of the pattern you go to the judges and drop your bridle for bit check. Every show Ive done the judges have been so nice and talkative.

That is so neat. Your mom's horse is beautiful (beauty that comes with a price, eh?)

I cannot wrap my head around neck reining. Which is weird because I can bridge the reins and jump a course or ride a hunter on the buckle all day long-- but I cannot stay on the flat on a Western horse for any period of time before I've picked up the reins in both hands and I didn't even notice.

Once I was riding Stoney/Shane's landlord's team penning horse (he is awesome) in his Western tack and I was doing all these crazy sliding stops and spins etc. in the Western saddle but I could NOT stop myself from picking up the reins with both hands. Even though the horse had a big shanked bit it and I had no contact and there was NO WAY I was going to pick up any-- I just need both hands. Is that weird? I think I could get used to the Western saddle but never neck reining.

I told his owner "if I take him team penning, I am going to ride him in my Jaguar." She laughed and was like "you do that." I suspect I'd die. I am kind of scared of the cows, the ones with horns anyway.

V, just hold a rope in the other hand. Problem solved. ;)

I have gone team roping with my farrier a few times. I did not realize I was afraid of cows until I got in the pen with them. Had a wtf moment. Anyways, first night of team roping I tried over and over and finally got one back leg (I was the healer) and was so excited I threw both hands in the air to cheer myself on, letting go of the rope. :duh:

If I ever get to scared to jump, I'm going to do reining.

One thing I do hate about reiners, though...is that they tear up the ring. We occasionally get a reiner at our barn and the sliding stops are murder on the footing (nor are they fun to ride in the ring with: Having a galloping horse slam to a stop right in front of you is not good...it's even worse if they back...says she who rencently got stuck behind a reiner and she stopped between a jump and the rail giving me no where to go).

Most big reining barns have sliding 'pits'. Long straight stretches of deep deep sand just for sliding.

My moms horse is much better at sitting down to stop now. Really wish I had a new video.

Boy, this brings back memories! I showed on the AQHA circuit as a youngster. That was before the peanut roller phenomenon took over, thank goodness! I even was the reserve World Champion in reining at the AQHA Youth show in, well, 1977. That is probably before some of you were born :teehee: :teehee:
