I am looking for a hoof supplement for my mare; she's a 13 year old TB with just *ok* feet. We are finding that the area that is growing out from last winter [hay season] is brittle & weak, chips easily and splinters/fractures sometimes when shoeing. Her new hoof growth [pasture season] looks much nicer. In comparison, there is a significant difference between the winter hay (timothy/orchard mix) and the pasture, which is mixture of timothy, clover, various meadow grasses, weeds, etc., so I am looking to make sure that I'm supplementing her diet through the winter months, especially.

I am not sure that a hoof supplement will make ALL the difference in her hoof quality, but have decided it can't hurt. So many choices...though. Does anyone have any experience with a product that they would recommend?

It's been my experience that Farrier's Formula is the 'best' one out there. You'll get a fair amount of growth. Now, if growth = quality, I don't know, but hooves definitely grew when mine were on it.

Belated thank you! Talked to my farrier yesterday and he agreed Farrier's Formula was a good product. Very confusing when you get the SmartPak catalog and find 33 different products! I've also ordered Keratex and hoping the combination will help improve my TBs feet. Thanks again!

Farrier's Formula is great. Another alternative is asprin and isoxoprine. Also, for some, Laminasaver seems to work better than the FF.

We have had an incredibly wet couple of months. You can tell a huge difference in the horses that have been having Keratex applied daily versus those who have not. What seems to work best is applying the gel daily, before the hooves get wet (I, as well as a couple others, leave it at the stall so the guys can put it on before turning out) and the hardener 2-3 times a week.

The product I use is Super Biozin. Really have seen big differences in my horses foot growth and quality as a result of this product. Came highly recommended by a couple of animal nutritionists and has lived up to the reviews.

Thanks for the tip! I've bought 60 days of Farrier's Formula but will be keeping a close look at her feet. I have to say that the Keratex is amazing stuff; it's only been 5 days but I can see the difference - we had some cracking/crumbling around nail holes and obviously it didn't *fix* it, but it repaired it quite well for the time being. My goal is that when the new, improved hoof grows in it won't need as much "help" from the Keratex, but so far I'm a believer in the Keratex!

I would recommend always using the Keratex gel when their feet are going to get wet - it does an excellent job of sealing the feet. No matter how nice a foot you've got, water is going to undermind taht! I use it year round - when its dry I put it on before bathing or hosing off, when its wet, definitely before they get turned out.

Not a hoof supplement, but I've noticed that since putting my horse on Platinum Performance a few months ago, his hooves are growing much faster and the quality is better. He has typical, lousy TB feet that usually take forever to grow and are pretty crumbly. He previously was on Accel (another general nutritional supplement) for years, but when he suddenly decided to stop eating anything with Accel in it, I switched to PP. SO if your horse also is on a general supplement, maybe give Platinum Performance a try.

It depends on the feed, on the soil and grasses in your area, depends on the hay, and depends on your horse's genetic makeup. I've had friends who swore by products that did not work on my ottb mare or on my wb (related by blood these 2).

So what worked for me was/is: John Ewing's Trainers' Formula (I'd still be using it but it doesn't come in smartpaks) So I use the concentrated farrier's formula which works.

For external care, the Life Data Labs hoof disinfectant worked great and hardened hooves right away.
My farrier has me now using crossapol, which took a few months to work, but is doing quite well now.

I also like Platinum Performance.

So keep experimenting, I've used products for 6 months to a year before I gave up on them. Both supplements and external treatments.

What did not work for mine: Keratex, a big bust, Next Level Hoof Supp, Glanzen3.

Oh cornucresine helps grow hooves if applied to the hoof, and also helps heal old scars where hair hasn't grown back
