Dan The Man
1993 chestnut TB gelding.

I never did post a tribute to Dan here. I guess it has taken me the full year to really accept that he is gone. Tomorrow is the anniversary of his death, though it feels like tonight-- the first Sunday in September will never be the same.

Truly my heart horse, him coming to me was several years in the making. I never in my life dreamed I'd own a horse like that. Thanks to EqT's generosity, we were able to find a way to make it work. When he finally did arrive in June of 2008 it felt like I'd finally found my partner. He and I had a rapport I've never had with a horse, and don't expect to, ever again.

He was many things to many people in his 15 years-- a stakes winner, a junior hunter, a dressage schoolmaster, but to me he was a best friend. He restored my confidence in horses, and in people. He was a calming presence in my life at a time when many things were challenging and chaotic.

I cannot believe it has been a year since I hugged him. Sometimes it feels as if him being in my life was only just a dream, and yet other times I think if I just drive back to his barn he must still be there....

His halter and lead still hangs in the garage, where I left it. His "things" are relatively untouched. The locks of mane and tail are still hidden away in the drawer. His ashes are still in the UPS box they arrived in from Cornell, unopened. I suppose some day I will find peace. Right now, I've only just found acceptance.

God Bless, my lovely boy.

What a beautiful boy he is, Flash. And I do mean is, not was--he lives on and on in the memories of the people who love him. He even lives on in the memory of those who never met him, like many of us here at TOC. I will hug my chestnut horse today in his honor.

Thanks guys. You all have been so kind over the last year.

I am glad to have the first anniversary past us now. We just had a quiet day hanging out and then I spent a few hours with Win.

Win has been a blessing these past 11 months. It is odd how I'm never sad when I'm at the barn-- it is only quiet moments now that it hits me, usually in the car or something. Win keeps me so busy with his needs (and demands! ;) ) that I never have time to grieve while in his presence... which is a good thing.

Anyway thanks again to all who sent us support and hugs over the last year. We appreciate it wholeheartedly.
