Today was Frankie's second show, and my first time riding him off the property. He honestly couldn't have been any better! It was just a little schooling dressage show, and I did intro test A. I have never done dressage EVER in my life, and I am a hunter through and through. But it was a close, inexpensive show and others from my barn were going so I figured "why not."

He was super quiet and super relaxed. No one could believe he's only 3. Seriously, he was the quietest horse there. In fact, maybe too quiet, the judge commented that I could have a little more "forward" at the trot. That's how quiet he is. I LOVE that! He has the best attitude and is so easy.

In terms of quality of performance-- it wasn't bad. He was saddled with me, so he was at a disadvantage right off the bat. :teehee: I practiced the test a few times at home, both in our indoor and outdoor dressage ring. Both have letters-- but they are small/unobtrusive and are OUTSIDE the ring. When we went in for our test, he was super good except that every time we saw a letter-- he wanted to sniff it. I guess the letters look a lot different when they're white cones right under the chain which is the edge of the ring? I dunno. So everywhere there needed to be a BEND, there was a BULGE. He wasn't spooky, he didn't mind the cones-- he just wanted to check what flavor they were. Other than the bulging (the world "bulge" is written on my test... A LOT!) he was super and the test rode very precisely (at home he'd been a wobble fest in the free walk across the diagonal, but today he was straight as an arrow). I got very very nice comments. I ended up 4th behind several people who are really serious dressage riders and show training level, they were schooling in the intro class. I wasn't expecting to pin at all, I was totally flabbergasted.

I really love this BabyHoss (TM)!!! :cloud9:

Handsome man posing outside the ring. Nice toothmarks from his turnout buddy to accentuate the contours of his derriere!

Um, Frankie, maybe YOU want to listen to the comments too?!

That is so awesome!!! He looks great and congrats on your placing. I suspect that he trotted straight across the diagional because he was heading to the cone on the corner for a nibble. :teehee: Baby horses are such fun. :cheer:

And yesterday he went to a BIG show (hundred of horses, jumpers, music, a fair with blow up rides, bleachers, golf cats, mopes, people EVERYWHERE-- and he was a little freaked but did settle in and performed well). I couldn't be happier with him (er, except that if he got leads in his class, that'd be helpful. He usually is pretty good about picking up his leads I think the "ambiance" made concentration a bit difficult for him). I was glad Mme. Trainer rode, there was a LOT going on and he knew it. She gave him a good confident ride that settled him...

Also, this little mare (not so little any more) who came to our barn to be ridden/sold was a SUPERSTAR. I LOVE her... LOVE here. She's only been to a few shows and she's 4, she marched right in there and held her own-- ribboning in a sea of VERY fancy horses in the baby greens. Just acted like she goes to horse shows with fairs every day. LOVE this girl! Whoever ends up with her is going to be very, very lucky...

Good day!

After all this horse show stuff, and being yanked around by a 3 year old for 8+ hours yesterday, every inch of my body is SORE. I don't think I've stood up for that many hours in a row, ever! LOL! From getting to the barn at 6am to bathe/braid to leaving the show at 5:30pm for an hour ride back to the barn... it was a long day. A good day, but a long one. I slept like the dead! :)

Thanks again to my boyfriend for the pictures, my trainer for the good rides, and my pals (Lion1024 included) who showed up to cheer me on!!!

And shoutout to the Callie cat, who likes to help me organize my tack luggage the night before a show!

V he is ADORABLE! And such a good brain! I love the picture of you and him trotting at the dressage show, he doesn't even look like a baby horse there!

You should be so proud.... good job picking him, and getting him out and about. He is going to be such a superstar!

V, what show was it? Do they still have Ludwig's Corner on Labor Day? I remember freezing there on Labor Day as a kid.

Frankie looks great. How long have you had him? Did your trainer jump or just do flat classes? Either way, it is super that he is going and acting like a big grown up boy at the shows.

It was Ludwig's Corner, the same show you remember! I swear, there are more and more people there every year. They had 36 children's horses walk/trot in the hack at the same time and didn't take down any of the jumps. THIRTY SIX! They split them to canter but holy heck-- I wouldn't want to walk in that ring with that many horses!!!

I bought Frankie mid-July. He hasn't been undersaddle for very long. Kristin (my trainer) just took him in the young hunter under saddle class, which was 50% conformation and 50% hack. He's really only jumped once, since I bought him. Kristin took him in a clinic with Richard Lamb and he had her jumping 2'3 lines of solid fences. Kristin had never, EVER jumped him before the clinic. He's going to start doing small amounts of jumping more regularly this winter. Right now he's just working on the flatwork to get that firmly in place before he moves on.

I am really pleased with him, I've never had such a young horse before. It's surprisingly fun!

Gosh V -- You guys look great! Frankie is lightyears ahead of the 3-year old I just started riding this past week. We're only just starting to install brakes and steering, and I couldn't even imagine cantering right now!
