I've been riding in Sprengers for about 10 years now. Both of my ankles are bad, and regular stirrups make my ankles hurt and my feet fall asleep in no time flat. I also started to lose my right stirrup fairly regularly when jumping 3'6, I think b/c I wasn't putting enough weight in my heel b/c my ankle hurt (right one is worse than left). But once I started riding in the Sprengers all of that pretty much went away. I honestly can't remember the last time I lost a stirrup, and the ankle pain, etc. ceased almost immediately. I recently schooled a horse in someone else's saddle with regular stirrups and I was crippled for about 15 minutes after I got off, so I do know the Sprengers make a big difference for me.

I'm not a big fan of the jointed stirrups. I prefer regular old fillis style. The saddle I'm riding Elf in has the jointed ones and I just feel like there's nothing there...no base.

'Course, I don't have ankle, knee or back pain to contend with ( ), as I hear many people who love the bendy stirrups do ( :lonely: ).

Thanks for all the tips everyone. I think I'm going to spring for a pair, and if I hate them I'll look to resell. I haven't yet pulled the trigger on buying yet, but I think I'm ready. My feet both fell asleep today in my lesson; rode a new horse (new to the barn as well) and he had an oddly short-strided trot and I felt like I had to work really hard to stay with him....as a result I think I jammed my ankles down trying to keep lower leg steady and...viola...a cluster-you-know-what...losing stirrups and feet asleep...honestly I'm ready to give up riding in stirrups altogether. (Ha, I say that until I have to, then I'll be begging for them back, I'm sure!).

I am fearing that I will feel "bouncy" in my stirrups with jointed ones but at this point I'm ready to try something new. I really do think it is mostly ME. Not my stirrups. But since I'm not planning to ride in any GM clinics soon....I'm willing to use a crutch if it doesn't make me worse.

I'll post an update when I get them!

I hope I'm not too late TrialByFire, but Dover has a money back guarantee so if you don't love the stirrups (regular 4F Sprengers, Bow Balance Sprengers, Royal Riders or whatever you try), I think you can return them. My friend ordered a fly sheet from them and wasn't happy with how it fit, so she returned it. I would hope that you could say you weren't happy with how they fit/felt/whatever, and they would take them back.

Also, Pelham Saddlery let's you "trial" the MDC Ultimate or Comfort Irons.

Ohhhh - I wonder if I could trial the MDC's up here?!?!?

I have a crappy right knee/ankle (trashed the ankle in HS, ended up torquing the knee compensating for the ankle...). It's all back together now, but I'm super cautious about them.

Ooh, that's great news! I didn't know that but I'm thinking of going big time and buying the Bow Balance Sprengers, because my knees have gotten so bad they hurt when I'm not riding, too....but they are so expensive if they don't help at all it would be such a waste! Maybe I'll try Dover....I've been on the fence about what to buy....such a baby when it comes to parting with my money! :) Thanks!!

I ordered the Herm Sprenger 4-ways

http://www.smartpakequine.com/productclass.aspx?productClassid=812

I had a chance to use someone else's last week before I ordered and I really liked them; so I orderd this week and just got them yesterday. I'm not sure how much of a long-term difference they make yet (have only ridden in them twice now) but so far so good.

I just have to report that I got the Herm Sprenger 4-ways and have been riding in them about 3 weeks and my knee pain is GONE. Totally. I am going to start running again. (And hope it doesn't come back from that!) But I do think that riding was aggravating my knee and so far :luck: I am happy to be much improved. [I was taking daily Aleve and trying to help my joints w/ Osteo-biflex but have not taken either in a week.] I should stay on the Osteo Biflex but so far have not needed the Aleve in about 7 days....going to do a short run this weekend and see how it goes, but compared to my ice-pack days of a month ago.....I'm happy!

Thats really good news!

The other day I rode in my old saddle cause it fit a pony I was riding better, and it had regular flex irons on it. Ive been using RR's for several months now. I didnt even realize how much difference the wide foot bed made in my knee pain. After 15 minutes in the regular stirrups my one foot was numb. Also had an rls flare up (will randomly get it if I over use my knee) that evening. Just thought it was interesting how much difference is made in using the correct stirrups for your body.
