Does anyone use jointed stirrups and do you like them? Odd that I can only find them for around $30-40, or the Herm Sprenger for $199. Nothing in between unless I'm missing something....not sure I'm ready to pay $200 for them as I have never tried them but $30 doesn't sound like enough to be sure they aren't junk! I have a problem with one foot bouncing out of my stirrup all the time, and I realize it is 99.99% rider error...but my stirrup irons are some no-name cheap ones I got at an tack clearance sale. So I was asking my trainer if she thought buying Korsteel or other "quality" irons would make any difference, and she suggested I try jointed stirrups because I have a number of other old-lady problems (think I'm developing arthritis in my knees).... Anyway, I'm not entirely against putting up the bucks if there is a real difference, just thought I'd ask the TOC experts for their recommendations! |

My recommendation is to start with the cheap ones and see if they do anything for you. For many of my friends, the cheap ones get the job done. For me, it's the Sprengers or bust--I can feel the difference after a ride in the cheapies and a ride in the Sprengers. Be sure to shop around and really think about the nature of your problem before you choose a "specialty" stirrup. For some people, the MDC stirrups/bow balance/Royal Rider Flex are a better solution for stirrup dropping. I do not have stirrup-keeping problems but I did have knee pain before buying the Sprengers, so I bought the product that I knew would solve that. |

Thanks Jenny! I agree about finding the root of the problem - I do think it's *me* but I recently bought new Korsteel stirrups for my girls' saddles (the only peacock stirrups I could find at the local tack store and I didn't have the energy to shop around!) and they were so much heavier than my own stirrups. So I thought it might be worthwhile to buy a good pair of stirrup irons and that's when my trainer mentioned the jointed ones. They might help my "lost" stirrup or not; but they did sound interesting enough to look into. I agree that buying $200 stirrups aren't a great idea if I have no real reason to suspect they will help! Maybe I'll see if I can get any good deals on cheaper jointed stirrups and try them. It certainly won't kill me to spend $50 on them and if I don't love them it won't be a major investment. Of course if anyone has any other thoughts, I'm interested in hearing them. Thanks again! |

Hey there, I got these http://www.beval.com/Products/Flex-Stirrup-Iron/0014005.aspx and they made a HUGE difference...I'll never go back to regular stirrups No need for the $200 ones...and yeah, I hear ya on the "old lady" syndrome (exactly WHEN did we get old???)

Thanks...I may just get some and ride in them for a few weeks; they are cheap enough to do that and if I hate them...which is unlikely, since my irons are probably as bad as you can get...I won't be broke! Someone was willing to let me ride in their saddle with their flex-stirrups, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to tell what is attributed to the saddle, the irons, etc. As far as WHEN we got old....seems like just this year!!

I have the Sprengers (and have had the Royal Riders Flex which I prefer but my trainer does not) and like them cause they help with hip and back pain. The heavier the stirrup the more pain you might have if you have knee issues so I wouldn't worry about your cheapie regular irons. What may also really help your foot slipping are the Super Comfort Stirrup Pads. I LOVE them. $22.00 or something from smartpak. |

Thanks for the suggestion! Honestly, I'm not sure what my problem is but I frequently drop my left stirrup. I think it's probably a knee pinching issue but since I have bad (very tight) hips and my knees are getting creaky....wondering if the flexible stirrups might help unexpectedly. I'll look up the Super Comfort Stirrup Pads, too. That could make a big difference! |

I have the nice Sprenger stirrups. I really liked them on my "Fat Man!". I have a bad ankle and where his belly broke against my leg it made it very hard to keep my leg quiet. With the jointed stirrups that went away. However, I think it made me unstable in my base of support. I think the give made me unconsciously worry my foot would fall out of the stirrup and I have a REAL problem now getting back in my heels. I don't have the issue with my current horses stomach, so my leg lays on him normal. LOL |

I had some of the original HS 2 way jointed stirrups forever and recently got the Bow Balance ones. I love them! I use them with the super comfort grip pads and I'm golden. helps a ton with my lower back and ankles. I can definitely tell a difference when I get on a horse with 'normal' stirrups. OUCH! |

Thanks guys, really interesting! What's most interesting is that I have this problem mainly on lesson horses, v. my own horse...which makes me wonder if it's not just a different body shape that I'm not used to.....I know good riders can adapt to any horse they get on, but...well, I'm not a really good rider! So if I take a lesson on a new schoolie I struggle! Maybe I'll see if I can try a pair before buying. Like I said, I'm not against spending the money but I hate to do it and have no change....although no one has posted saying they hated any type of jointed stirrup, so I guess that's good! I really appreciate the ideas! Thanks everyone! |

I have Sprengers and I love them. I don't lose my stirrups as often as with the regular fillis stirrups. I've also tried the Royal Riders and really liked them, but not ready to spend the extra dollars. I use those steel stirrup 'pads'...not sure what they're called, but they look like a meat mallet. They also help keep your feet in the stirrups. |

I used to use a set of cheap knock-offs that I got for $25 at a tack sale. Pros: my heel went down, down, down... I used to be very flexible, so this wasn't jamming my heel down, this was just the degree to which the stirrup allowed me to sink weight into my heel. Cons: they had so much flex and spring that they literally bounced my leg up at the sitting trot. They would probably help me more now that injuries have deprived me of that old flexibility, but being bounced out of the tack by your own stirrup irons is a rather interesting experience that I'm rather afraid to repeat! The $40 knockoffs from Dover, the ones with the gray rubber pieces instead of black, do not have as much spring as either my old stirrups or the Sprengers. If you are looking for something to help knee and ankle pain, I actually like the Royal Riders stirrups better. Don't take them to a George Morris clinic, but the wide track gives you a better base of support and there's something about the material that is very shock-absorbent. You can put a cheese-grater stirrup pad on the tread. In fact, if you have problems losing your stirrups, go out and buy the cheap $10 snap-in cheese grater stirrup pads for whatever stirrups you end up getting. They are a godsend! |

I have a pair of HS and my mom has a pair of the cheaper ones. I cant tell the difference between the two. I recently bought a pair of Royal Riders and man am I in heaven. My feet no longer fall asleep while Im riding and Im having less knee pain. Back hasnt changed at all though. I will say that I wont ride anything extremely green in the RRs because I cant get my foot out of them quickly enough if I need to. Edited by OpticalIllusion, Aug 18 2009, 05:19 AM.
