My boy eventually recovered, so thankfully now it's just a crummy memory. But you're wise not to do a spinal tap. My boy actually got really F'd up with that -- had a couple of seizures -- and then he foundered mildly when they gave him too much azium to reduce the inflammation in his spine. The only amusing part of that ordeal is that my horse developed such a dislike for the main vet in charge of him at the clinic that every time the vet did anything involving the back end, Jesse would poop on him. Every.Single.Time. Anyhoo, continued jingles that your vet is able to figure out what's going on and/or that Win continues to improve on his own.

I am so sorry you are having such a struggle! I know its really hard because unfortunately horses are just so hard to figure out at times. Their size makes diagnostics so hard. I know you trust your vet andd she doesn't seem too rushed in finding a diagnosis but instead is taking it slow and waiting to see what happens. By and large, as long as things are not progressing at a rapid rate that's not such a bad thing, but its stressing you out too much! If you are at all like me, you'd rather know what's wrong, no matter the severity, than just waiting and playing this (educated) guessing game. I just do better knowing the good, the bad, and the ugly. If he were mine, if feasible, I'd chat with my vet and go on and get a referral to a clinic or hospital with advanced diagnostic tools. He just seems to have a couple issues that may or may not be related, and can be caused by a number of things, in varying degrees of severity. I just want you to have some answers! I know you are feeling the same way. I'm just worried about all the stress that is on you with this. I totally get it - I have certainly been there, with horses and with dogs. big hugs to you for all the love and care you are giving this special guy, and big kisses to Win for just being him! |

Thanks Kiki for the input, I appreciate it. I do think this whole not knowing thing is stressing me out, and I am trying to come to terms with the fact that we may never really know what is up. I haven't seen him do the pee dance in about 4-5 days. He is eating better and gaining weight back. He seemed quite happy tonight, his usual old self, which I have not seen in awhile. I threw him on the longe for 5 minutes to see how his hind end looked, he is still terribly off but it is weird... he doesn't seem to notice or care and was happy to truck around at a trot, blowing out his nose, ears pricked. Even just 5 minutes tired him out though which made me incredibly sad but hey he was otherwise great tonight, so I cannot complain. I'm really struggling internally with how far to go diagnostically. Right now I am glad he seems more stable the past 4-5 days and he is finally eating better. |

FlashGordon - this thread always brings tears to my eyes. Anyway, I'm glad the old man seems to be feeling better and I totally understand your pain as to how far to go. About EPM, I'd seen a couple of references in the previous replys but your mention above made me have to post this. this is my story, (very condensed). I had a 3 year old Hanoverian mare I bought in Ca and had her shipped her to FL. Took me a while to start working her because I'd just bought this farm and was getting it into shape. When I finally started working with her (lunge in the round pen) she seemed a little off behind. Everyone I had look at her (not at the vet stage yet) said they didn't see anything. finally she had a terrible colic episode (where she was staggering and looking like she was going to fall down). Brought her to the clinic for that, mentioned the strange lameness to the vet, when the colic was over, she did a neurological work-up, spinal tap, and bam - EPM. I only tell you this because you brought up the lameness. Anyway, I'm sure EPM shows in various ways ... And about the spinal tap, I find it odd so many people get so wacked out over it. I realize it could have repercussions, but my vets have done them here on my farm, out in the grass. Got uncompromised results and the horses were all fine. My heart goes out to you girl. |

Thanks guys! Smorse I am glad you shared that story. A shame about the mare, how did things pan out for you with her? Did she recover? Also interesting to hear your experience with the spinal taps.... vets here seem kinda weird about doing them, but he is going to the clinic so maybe it is something we can do there. The estimate my vet got me was doable so I think I'm going to go ahead and have him scoped. Having another set of eyes on him won't hurt, either. He is doing pretty well this past week, he's put more weight on and he is eating and drinking better still. I've done very little with him aside from groom, pick his fronts, and check him over.... he seems more comfortable the less I mess with him. I should probably trot him up today and take a look at his hind end again. My vet has been very supportive and kind and checking in regularly. I am glad to have someone like that on our side. Not all vets in this area are quite so attentive to their patients!! I will admit the whole thing has made me very sad... I am glad I have been distracted emotionally this past week with work, little FG going to school, etc. |

Hey there... Mr. FG has actually been on Windsor duty the last week as we've had some other things going on and I've not been able to get there. I snuck out this afternoon though, just got back....he looks pretty good. Hind end is still not right, but no worse. He was drinking and playing with his water bucket. He's put weight on as well. All very good things. My barnmate said he's definitely improved and seems to be making a turn for the better.I'm still going to have him scoped, but needless to say, I am pleased that he is rallying. I have no idea why but am thankful nonetheless. He looked like he was on death's door 5-6 weeks ago and I really thought he wasn't going to make it another winter. If he holds steady we may be ok for awhile! He looooves Mr FG, I am not sure what it is, but they get along famously. So thankfully he hasn't been missing my presence, though I've definitely missed him!!!! Everyone cross your fingers he continues to hang in there.... |

Fingers still crossed! I read this to say "Mr. FG has been on Windsor this week" and I was but then I re-read. I thought maybe he was going to be your "husband horse". Sounds good for now....no worse is always good! Fingers crossed for more improvement too! |

Hi Flash Glad to see Win is doing better (I was thinking about you 2 a few weekends ago while doing my daydreaming while mowing). My mare with EPM I just put down this past spring. I'm in Florida and the summers are unbearable, she was getting more wobbly and I thought I'd let her have the winter since it's not so hot and humid. She did go downhill thru last winter, though, lost weight and stuff. I think she was ready to go. I'd find her laying down quite a bit (and I never used to see her laying down). I think she was having trouble getting up too, as I'd see the spot where she'd been laying down, looked like she spun around while trying to get up. Anyway, the day it was done, she was laying down when the vet got here and we did it right there, it was a peaceful ending and I really felt relief. I also put her old mare friend down that day, she was a crippled off the track Thoroughbred and it was her time also. (She was bout 35 or so, whatever her age, she was ancient!!) I did get 3 babies out of the warmblood, could have gotten more, but I only bred her every other year. I never rode her though, after the EPM, I never felt as though I would be safe. So, if the Flash Gordon family comes to Disney World, let me know, I'm only about an hour away straight down the highway and I've got a farm full of horses looking for scratches and brushing. |

How is Winn doing now? Try giving him a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar daily, it will help keep kidney stones and crystals from forming. I hope the old boy gets well enough to tote your husband and kids around for years to come. |
