Is the meadow on fire?

Win has always been a bit weird about peeing... it seemed to get worse this spring. I could always tell when he needed to pee, he'd dance and get silly so I'd throw him back in his stall and away he would go. He seemed to pee more often than any horse I've ever known! Now the last few weeks I am noticing some new things that are concerning. He gets very agitated prior to peeing and seems to be going in short bursts. The last few days he has almost been acting colicky before he pees-- pawing, pacing, getting anxious. He's been nickering to me non-stop which is very unlike him, and may be beside the point, but I find it odd as he is not a snuggly type of horse. BO and barnmate think I am being overly paranoid, but I KNOW this horse.... tonight hubby and I went out to check on him and same thing-- acting colicky, kicking at his belly, swishing his tail, and tonight he actually strained before and after peeing. Even Mr. FG was like WTF! He hasn't had a temp and is eating fine, though he has lost weight seemingly overnight. The peeing issues have come to a head over the last few days, and I am going to go with my gut on this one and call the vet ASAP, even though friends think I am being a nutjob!! Let's cross our fingers it is something easy to fix like a bean or a small infection.... I don't even want to consider the alternatives! |

Jingling for Win! I agree that it doesn't sound good. Have you gone up there yourself with a clean pinky and a glove? If you luck out, it'll be a big ol' bean that you can remove easily and quickly! |

I think you're on the right track in suspecting a big bean or an infection. I've been prone to UTI's , and you feel like you've got to go all the time but dread it b/c it hurts. Jingles that that's all it is.

thanks guys!! I've been sick and haven't been out to the barn but mr. fg and a barnmate have been looking after him. both said he's doing ok, mr. fg thinks he is peeing better the last 1-2 days. regardless I still want to hve th vet out. I worry about my old man!! lord knows when he's last had his sheath cleaned so perhaps that is it. he'll need a good cocktail for it hence why I've waited to do it. |

FG, I hope Win is doing ok! Is he eating and drinking normally? Paddy had acute renal failure last year and had to spend a week in the hospital with 24-hour IV fluids! He, too, was acting colicy but he was stretching out like he had to pee and then looking at his belly. I took him to the clinic and he was admitted right away. You might want to have your vet pull blood to test for kidney function. Steph's Gunnar used to have pee problems, maybe she'll chime in. Good luck and let us know how it goes, ok?

ahh fishy that is right i forgot about paddy's bout with renal failure!! and he's recovered very well hasn't he? though i am sure your quick action in getting him to the cliic helped. not being able to get out there and monitor him i am worried though hubby and barn owner claim he is doing ok. i would like blood pulled so will talk with hubby and see if we can arrange it along with the sheath cleaning. |

Jingling for Win! Gunnar had incontinence problems in his late year. Still out there jumping while peeing! We were never able to resolve this and he ultimately spent the last few years of his life on SMZs and then he died of what they thought may be an ascending kidney disease! Hope Win is getting better! And you too my friend!

hey miss B..... hubby was at the barn for several hours last evening and assures me he is fine. BO says the same. he is eating and drinking and peeing and pooping and hubby thinks his weight has picked up this past week. but I did speak to BO about arranging the vet for early next week. I want a blood panel and want him tested for Lyme as well. I'm going to try and clean his sheath this weekend. hoping some quietex will take the edge off enough for me to do it. i am pretty sure everyone thinks i am just being paranoid, and maybe i am. hard not to be though. I'm annoyed because I am stuck at home and not allowed to drive. hubby said he'll take me out tonight so I am looking forward to that. I haven't seen him in a week so if anyone will notice anything different it will be me, given the time lapse. he is like my other child now and he is so high maintenance. there are a lot of little things i do for him that I worry he is not getting when I am not there, like his nightly mashes and such!! |

I have a gelding that had UTI as a yearling then a few months later went into Kindney failure and had to have 80 liters of fluids IV per day for a week along with blood drawn 2x a day to watch levels, he almost had to have a blood transfusion during this time also. He acted this same way when he had the UTI. Good luck! I wish you the best, it is definitely hard to figure out!!! Been there!!! |

Some suggestions: To train a gelding to let you clean his sheath, you can hose him off with water, and use the hose on a gentle spray to spray up into the sheath while you, with the other hand, use either a washcloth (or bare hand) with sheath cleaner on it, to clean up in the sheath. You can also use baby wipes. Horses don't notice your hand as much when water is irrigating the sheath. When he drops, when he's relaxed while you are grooming him, use your hand to check if his penis is very dirty or full of dried smegma. You can also check the head of the penis then to see if there is a bean. A lot of times, there will be dirt and smegma mixed just inside the rim of the sheath, and you can easily get that out with the hosing method. If you do this once a week or less, you'll keep everything clean. One BO told me that stallions "naturally" clean the smegma off of the penis thru sex, so I figured if I use my hand while grooming, it will keep it clean and it does. This way you won't get the stinky stuff building up in there. Smegma is clean, it's only when dirt gets in the sheath from lying down in pastures and stalls that it gets nasty. And try using some apple cider vinegar internally. My vet says a horse only needs one tablespoon a day, but I give more as it balances the PH in the urine in horses and dogs and cats, and helps prevent UTI and kidney stones and "sand." SMZs do help clear up many infections. I have a huge bottle of them in the barn. And get a good electrolyte to make him drink more. The more water intake the more urine outgoing. Beer is also good. The night before my father's kidney stone surgery many years ago, his doctor send him out to drink beer to see if it would flush out the stone. Didn't work and my father drank beer anyway, but it does help make horses pass more urine. Encourage him to urinate. When he does, reward him with a treat. My horses get nagged by me to do so. Remember, it's just a penis, and it's your horse's penis, so clean often and it will stay clean. |

Wow kickandhowl that is all awesome info!! Thank you! erollison, how scary about your yearling. that is the stuff I have nightmares about! I saw him last night and today and he's been perky and happy. Looks like he's put a little more weight on this week which is great. He peed last night while I was there and all seemed "normal"--- no straining or weirdness. Still following up with the vet but I felt better about the fact that nothing had changed and in fact seemed a little more stabilized. It is hard because I don't trust my own judgment sometimes-- I feel as if something is "off" but it is hard to grasp and everyone around me is saying he's fine and I'm just being a worrywort. Anyway, gonna attempt a sheath cleaning tomorrow and see where we get! Edited by FlashGordon, Aug 8 2009, 06:10 PM.

Well, he was doing his weird peeing dance tonight. I had called the vet earlier in the day anyway, as a horse in our barn has been running a fever and there was talk of Potomac Horse Fever and other such things. So I'm going to go ahead and do a quick work-up on Win just for good measure. |
