Is there a way to get the nasty mildew stank off of tack or should I just toss it?

Add white vinegar to some water and clean with glycerine soap using the vinegar/water. I let is sit for a day and repeat if necessary. I had some really moldy stuff that no longer smells of mold!

Also let it sit in the sun, if possible. I bought a used saddle that was really smelly w/ mildew and had white mildew in many areas under the flaps. First I gave it a good scrub with a soft sponge, baby toothbrush and castile soap (rinse well), and let it dry in the sun. After that I oiled it once, let it dry in the sun, then lightly conditioned it w/ Horseman's One Step and again, let it sit outside. It is 100% better. I definitely think the key was the soap & water, and the sun. (Got this tip from TOB; I was a bit worried about the whole idea of soap and water on leather but the results were great.)

Leather Therapy also makes a product that is great for getting rid of mold and preventing its return. After removing it as described above, use the LT conditioner and it won't come back!

I have heard if you ad listerine to your water that will also do the trick. I haven't tried it but have been meaning to because I have a martingal that I have been wanting to get that smell out.

Belvoir's Step One cleaner also has an anti-mold agent in it. A friend who used it on her mold-prone Western saddle says it works very well. :) It's the only cleaner I will use anymore.
