I had a lady email me about one of my horses. Based on her email address, she is a PBS weekly TV show host, has won all kinds of journalism awards, etc., and by USEF she has a hunter that she shows in the pre-adults. I think, OK, this is obviously someone who does ride and isn't a complete loony. We schedule the appt for 10:30 AM on Sunday. At 10:15 AM, she calls me, and says that she overslept, because someone called her at 7:30 AM, and she fell back asleep after, and that she wouldn't be able to make it until between 11-11:15 AM. Ok, fine, not a problem, I'll see you around 11 AM or so. Then, she says, "My husband is going to bring our 3 dogs. Is there a park or a field that he can take them to?" My response: "Um, no, there isn't, these are private horse farms or planted fields, and strange dogs are not appropriate." Her: "Well, I'll mention it, but we'll probably bring them anyway." At 10:45, I go out to the barn, check the rig (I haul the horses over to a friend's ring 5 min away to show them), put the mare in the cross-ties, groom her well, paint her feet, fly spray her, set out the tack, and am ready to go at 11:05. At 11:15, I decide to go ahead and groom the horse I'll be riding next after this appt is finished. After that, it's 11:25. So, I'm waiting... 11:30... waiting. 11:45... waiting. 12:00. Still waiting... and now really PO'd. Why? Besides the obvious, because I have someone else coming to see her at 1:30, and it's at LEAST an hour to haul over to the ring, ride her first, then have them ride her, haul her back home, park the trailer, and untack/bathe her. And I am NOT going to do that 2x to the mare without at least an hour's break in between. So I attempt to call the lady at the ph # she called me from that morning. No answer. I leave a message saying, "Please call me." I then put the mare away, and tack up the other horse I had to ride, and proceed to rider her. At 12:40, a Cadillac SUV pulls into the drive (which goes past our grass riding area). She drives PAST the VERY obvious parking area and pulls up directly in front of the barn and parks. She opens her door and gets out while I come riding up to the car (in which is at least 1 dog). She says, "Hello, Devon?" Me: "Yes." And I wait for a moment to see if she says anything else. Nope. Then: "I'm sorry, but I'm not going to be able to show her to you right now. I don't set up my schedule to allow for an extra 2 hours time cushion on appointments. I have someone coming at 1:30, and right now they have priority. If you'd like to go ahead and reschedule now to see her next Sunday, that's fine." Her: "Oh, no, that's OK." And she gets in her SUV, and drives away. What the HECK are people thinking??

Different strokes for different folks I guess. Ran into a similar situation awhile back, and did eventually sell them 2 Equines. However her DH with his doggie, "although told our barn was off limits to strange dogs", barged in anyway after the warning. I just stood there smiling, and waiting for his Irish Setter to come running & screaming back out the door, with our Mama Barn Cat firmly attatched on top! Never had a problem with them bringing their dogs around again. They learned the hard way...thankfully without their dog loosing an eye etc. Mama Cats with Kittens are great dog deterents......Otherwise they would have dealt with Crusty Ole Me a little sooner.

My mom likes to tell the story of how I sold my first horse, way back at age 12. I put an ad in the paper and took all the calls etc. If someone stood me up, I'd call them back asking why they didn't come My mom used to crack up on that one...ah the innocence of youth! sorry you had to deal with that, what a nightmare. Hopefully the second people liked your horse! |

Sorry to hear about the wayward buyer. But like Maya, maybe the 1:30 will take her? Did they like her? |

Yes, the 1:30 people liked her, so we'll see. I also have 4 more people scheduled through the week to see her. So fingers crossed! |

Mmm-hmmm. Parking the car (of any sort) directly in front of the barn doors is an automatic "NO!" for me. I think: sorry, you don't have a clue, you won't be going home with this horse

O'ya..another automatic "no" in my mind: our rental and dealer cars have different plates or cdertain sequences on them, ie, you can always tell it's a rental or dealer car. That plate shows up on a really fancy car the "buyers" are driving into the barn and I think...uhhhhhh NO!!!!! There are other ways to "impress" me! Good for you, though, not trying to put the mare through two tryouts! Seen that. |

People always pull past our parking area and park right in front of the ring gate. Umm duh! How do you expect me to get in there? I had someone email me yesterday to see if they could come pick up my mare and take her for a month to try her out. She lives 7 hours away. This is also a cheap horse. Not to mention on dont do trials. Edited by OpticalIllusion, Jul 7 2009, 07:48 AM.

Well, those people are stupid anyway. Why in the world would you rent/drive a really fancy car to go try a horse? I wouldn't want seller's thinking I'm loaded. Seriously, why can't people be normal. Devon: Those people suck. I was 30 minutes late when trying Elf, but I called...and then apologized profusely. Hope all the others go better. |

Nuh. I know, eh? The best was the one who brought her kid out for the first riding lesson... while "test driving" the car (15-20 minutes is customary around here).. gave me shit for 'taking so long".. then told me why she needed to leave... they actually had also stopped off at several places on the way to the barn.. also were over an hour late for the lesson.. wonder what the dealer thought when they returned that car SEVERAL hours later?!?! For that matter, anyone who's actually trying a horse is often out for at least an hour. Actually come to think of it, I had one person dealing with a very irate dealer asking when the car was coming back. Or the one who brought the friend's car and then the younger kid broke (or was it spilled?) something in it. They were also front-door parkers.Ahhh yes, several winners there
