I need some suggestions for a bridle for my TB as I need to get an inexpensive show bridle and standing martingale. Petey is probably between a cobb and full size as the full size bridles I have are either on the last hole for the cheek pieces or I have had the buckle moved on one bridle I use. He has a small head with a tiny little star and he's a dark bay. Should I stay away from wide nosebands or fancy stitching?

Here is a picture of him from last winter with the bridle I'm currently using. I have oiled it some to darken it but I don't think it is that great. It's a cheap bridle and I want my sweet boy to have a nicer bridle. Please excuse the winter hair :sigh: but at least is shows his face.

The problem is my budget!!! I would like to stay under $250 for the bridle and martingale if possible!!!! I'm looking at Bobby's Bridles as there are some that fit the price range.

Is this too much/wide for my guy?

Of course I'm worried that he's between cobb and full size so that may be difficult fitting him. Who else besides Beval will swap bridle pieces out when you buy one?

Suggestions please!!!

Hi, Petey's Mom. I think Petey would look nice in the bridle you picked.

You might want to look at Red Barn bridles. My girlfriend bought one and loves it. They're available at SmartPak.

I've also heard great things about the new line of bridles at SmartPak. I think he would look pretty in this one:

There's a thread on these bridles on TOB.

I actually think either of these would look better on him...both are within your budget

REALLY like these ones and they're on sale

This Showmark one is on sale - it more expensive but still within your means

I'd stay away from the wider bands with his face - but that's just me......

Check out Aramas. I bought one this spring and I've had lots of complements. Budget priced and looks expensive, can't beat that!

Hijump - I like the Aramas bridles but for my budget they seem a little high since reins are sold separately and I have to buy a standing martingale too.

Snaffle - Red Barns look nice as well!!!! I looked at the SmartPak bridles but I don't care for the crowns - they look weird to me. Am I the only one that thinks that?

Missbri - Thanks for all the links!!!! I have read mixed reviews on the quality of leather on the Crosby's, Toulous and the Circuit bridles. I know Crosby's use to be the 'in' thing but is their quality still good?

I sure wish there was a good tack store near me so I can look/touch the bridles.

What do ya'll think of this Beval? The nice thing with Beval is they will interchange bridle pieces if needed.

Oh, yes I agree Hijump that a wide nose is not what my guy needs. He's got a typical delicate TB face!!!

PM - I agree...the headstalls on the SmartPak bridles are a bit strange. I bought a Vespucci with an integrated headstall...it was a quite different design than the SmartPak's - I like the design but I ruined the bridle with over-oiling.

I have a Beval LTD. LOVE IT. The leather quality is really nice and it hasn't stretched as much as the Edgewoods. Only bummer - it came with really wide reins.

That's nice - Bevals are a good value

What about the Showmark bridle that's on sale? It's about $90 off and a very nice quality bridle

ha-ha!!!! Nothing yet!

I have been looking at Red Barns:

http://www.smartpakequine.com/productclass.aspx?productClassid=6629

And found this Beval on sale:

http://www.beval.com/Products/LTD-2-Unpadded-Bridle-Havana/1150002-HAV.aspx

The problem is I'm looking at things a little more expensive than I initially wanted to spend. :mallet: Plus I have to get a martingale to match.

I'm planning on going to the consignement shop not too far away from me on Friday and see what they have. I will buy used if I can find something that I like and fits my guy.

Miss Bri - what is your opinion on fancy stitch vs. plain for my guy. He only has a tiny bit of white on his forhead and other than that he should have a dark colored heard (dark bay) except right now he's faded out by the sun. :sigh:

Because he doesn't have much white on his face, the fancy stitch should be fine (understated bling browband would be stunning - Ibex can help you with that).
Personally I prefer the plain - but I'm just an old fogey that likes the classic look.... ;)

Did you happen to check out that Showmark Bridle I posted? It's quite nice and a great value on sale.

 I did look at the Showmark bridle. It does look nice but Dover's doesn't seem to have it on sale right now.

I sure hope I can make it to the consignment shop tomorrow afternoon (after a lesson) and see what they have. I have measured a bridle I have so I'm armed and ready.

Well I bought a Red Barn Sovereign Hunter bridle and matching martingale today at the tack store. I think it fits him but didn't try it with a bit yet, just slipped it on for a few minutes. I will try it agan and take pictures in the next day or so. I also got a good deal as the local tack store will take 20% off if you buy three items on a list the store has. So I bought a new pair of paddock boots (which I needed very badly) and got 20% off the bridle, martingale and the boots.

I love shopping when I can get good deals. :cheer:
