Long story short -- my horse was about 2 shoeings away from totally growing out his hoof after a bad case of seedy toe last spring. Now, sadly, with all the freaking rain we've had for the past 6 weeks his feet are like mush and the seedy toe appears to be back. Blacksmith will be coming out in the next couple of days to pare back the hoof wall and drummel out the bad stuff, and it looks like I'll have another year of glue-on shoes, etc. to deal with -- this time with lameness added into the mix. Anyhoo . . . this past year my vet and blacksmith both told me to just squirt straight povidone iodine into the opened up area to kill anything that might try to work its way in there. That evidently wasn't enough in the end. Has anyone used anything else with success as a topical treatment while the hoof grows out?? Unfortunately he grows hoof at a glacial pace, so I'm going to need to use something for a good, long time . |

We use stuff, its purple, Thrush Buster. Works great. Also, if your not already, you might want to consider feeding him a biotin supplement to improve his hoof growth and the quality of his foot. |

Any kind of antifungal disinfectant should do the job, but I wonder if the problem with the iodine is that it's liquid and it's not staying where it needs to stay. Maybe regular applications of iodine + something creamy, like athlete's foot cream or monistat, would be more effective? |

Thanks guys. I do fee him a biotin supplement -- have been for 15 years now . . . it has helped a little but he still has crummy TB feet. He lost a shoe yesterday and is so lame right now that I think I need a radiograph to see how far up the infection goes, and then a trip to the super deluxe farrier if he needs a substantial resection. Oye. |
