My aunt is the only other horse lover in the family. She got into a bind about 6 years ago and I agreed to take on one of her geldings, a 17 year old Arab. She had stopped paying board on him, and the barn owner had shut him in a shed with no turnout, no stall cleaning, and minimal feed. When he came to me he was a wreck, and was not ridable due to a severe swayback... I am not sure if it was a genetic issue (he'd not had it as a younger horse) or if it was a result of poor nutrition, inadequate exercise, etc. I had him for 4 years in total, loved on him, groomed him, and treated him like a big pet. When I got another ridable horse, my aunt was supposed to once again take over his care and expenses, but that never happened... so I kept caring for him as if he were mine and footing his bills, and that was ok, because he was a sweet boy and I was able to do it at the time. She'd come out to see him every 6-9 months or so. Then one day I walked into the barn and he was gone. She had sold him for $500. And then she couldn't understand why I was upset.I've tried not to think about him too much the last 2 years, as I feared for where he went. But she told me on Sunday that the woman who has him cannot keep him anymore and asked if my aunt wants him back... if not, she is going to try to sell him. (What a 23 year old unridable Arab with lordosis is worth, I am not sure. )My aunt's response was "well, he's old now, and I don't want to deal with health issues... so I told her I don't want him." This is a horse she had bought as a 2 year old and had for 15 years!! I talked to Mr. FG about it and there is no way I can financially take him on. My aunt claims that there is a nice 4-H family that is a friend of his current owner, and that they are going to take him. How true that is, I don't know. I know I need to stay out of it, and that I cannot save them all, but it breaks my heart. I have asked my aunt to get the name and info of the family who may be taking him, so that I can at least keep track of him. Sorry, just needed to vent, and figure you'd all understand. Ooh, that would bother me, too. Which is probably why I have perpetually had a barn full of unwanted horses. But that's not baaaad, necessarily. Although having my trainer's gelding here is keeping me from having "empty stall syndrome". I wish I had words of wisdom. I do think you need to try to maintain some distance because otherwise you are likely to either a) end up with the horse; or b) end up broken-hearted. With luck he will go to the other family and I hope that you find out who they are so you can keep track of him. Honestly, at this point in time....had my opinion been asked...I'd probably recommend euthanasia. I hope instead a nice 4-h family takes him... ![]() Sigh. Wish I could help. I wish I had unlimited funds and acreage and I'd be one of those crazy old ladies with 100 cats, or horses, dogs, all of the above........

Thanks ladies. TBF I'm the same, if I had a barn it'd be full of wayward beasts! And Steph, you both look awesome in that pic!! ![]() The woman she sold him to is in Ohio so at least he is out of state, so I was sort of forced originally to distance myself... not like I could pop by and see him. I agree TBF that euthanasia is probably not a bad option for him. He has stringhalt as well and wasn't in terribly good shape when he left here, so I can only imagine how he's doing now. I figure all I can do is encourage my aunt to keep tabs on him and make sure he does not end up on a truck to Canada! I guess I am just disappointed that she has been so nonchalant about it. Especially since she had him so long, and he was nothing but a good boy for her. In college when I was riding very low-end sale horses, I learned the hard way that horses do end up in bad places, and that you cannot save them all. It was a tough lesson. I try to remember now that I cannot take on every stray creature... it is difficult. Especially when it is an animal/horse I know. Edited by FlashGordon, Jun 9 2009, 06:58 PM.

...and did your Aunt bother to give YOU the 500 dollars she gained from selling him the first time to reimburse YOU for all the money you spent on his care? What an A$$ she is. I am sorry for your situation. That really sucks for you and for the horse!!! |

Thanks for letting me vent..... it is just so frustrating. I mean I guess not everyone views horses the same way. But still I would have expected more from her. Yeah I think the thing I was most upset about when he left, was not only that, HE LEFT... but that she just sold him to the first person with $500. With no regard for where he was going or what was going to happen to him. After I'd loved him and cared for him for several years, even at times when I personally had a lot on my plate too... but felt a responsibility to him. Because he was a good boy and didn't deserve anything but kind treatment. Poor old man. Old horses always get to me.... because so often they get cast aside when they can no longer do their jobs, after so many years of service. I know it can be frustrating and expensive to try and maintain them, but heck then at least give them a peaceful ending instead of just selling them off to the highest bidder! |

It really bugs me when folks don't want to take care of their aged horses... especially the ones they have had practically their whole lives. We have my MILs 30 year old Paso Fino here... he is a grouch, is useless as a babysitter (just plain mean to the little ones), has feet problems up the wazoo, is IR... and the list probably goes on if I had x-ray vision and could see what the years of neglect that transpired over the time my MIL actually had him (doubt the horse ever saw the business end of a de-wormer until he came here)... She was going to sell him off to the first interested person (mind you she too had owned him since he was two)... so we took him on and he will spend the rest of his days here. FG, I hope you can keep tabs on this Arabian gelding... if he can't come back to live with you perhaps you can at least be a hands off guardian angel for him. |

Flashie... you're a good person for doing RIGHT by this horse for years when it wasn't your burden to bare. I was so ticked by your Aunts' actions above that I failed to mention that. It's not the money, it's the horse! I'm still keeping tabs on Luna's Dam...who I did not particularly like, because I worry she'll end up in the wrong hands. that it all turns out okay for the old guy!

I will admit J, there were times where I felt a little bit taken advantage of, cause when I took him on originally it was only temporarily. And heck I was a newlywed, just out of college, with bills and loans and things going on... but I grew attached to him and figured it was the least I could do for him. So in some ways, it was like a double whammy when she sold him without even telling me. Because I was attached to him, and supported him, even when it was a little hard for me sometimes too.... Sigh. CL, in his prime he was much like your Black. Not quite as handsome. But very similar. He too was a true black and he was a solid, athletic boy, once upon a time. Anyway going to check in with my aunt this weekend and see if she has heard anything more. |

I'm still in shock that she would do that do you. Why someone stills believes they 'own' something when they aren't taking care of it, aren't paying for it, etc is beyond me. You're a better person than me if you can still talk to your aunt. I would have a tough time being civil. |

I agree. So many ads out there for "old, retired, companion horses" and when you read the ad you basically know the story: horse is no longer useful, and owner wants room/money/time for something better/more fun/healthier. Trading in for the new model, so to speak. What kills me most is the "to good home only" part. Meaning....?.....someone who won't dump him because he's too old/useless? Like...YOU? Keeping my fingers crossed for this old guy, Flash.

That's what I can't get my head around either, snackie. Flashie took him, CARED for him, PAID HIS BILLS for YEARS...and Aunti sold him without even the courtesy of letting her know? That just It just seems more like thievery to me. I hope you took her off the Christmas Card list at the very least, Flashie. I would hard pressed to speak to the woman again.
