so ive had my mare for a year now... she's a been-there done-that kind of horse... she used to do the a circuit and is push button. i on the other hand, still need some work.

id love to do little exercises and flat work with her, but i cant think of anything to do.
Personally, i love jumping, and so does my mare but i just get SO bored on the flat...
any suggestions?

I get the same way....have you taken any dressage lessons? That would be a great way to liven things up and get her nice and soft at the same time. Lots to do onthe flat when you add in some basic dressage moves. Also, trot and canter poles. I like to set up a canter pole "course" to practice rhythm (sp?) and exercise my eye.

Trail ride. I have always done "flatwork" trail riding as much as possible, instead of in the boring old ring.

I use some of the gymkhana games as exercises. Things like barrel racing(clover leaf), pole bending (weave cones), keyhole. We work at all gaits (obviously starting with walk) and concentrate on balance and rhythm, lengthening and collection. In the keyhole we practice turn on the forehand and turn on the haunches without going over the lines.
Other flatwork exercises that may not be as boring - spirals in and out - concentrate on balance, rhythm, concsistency of gait, lateral work - shoulder fore, shoulder in, haunches in, leg yeild, half pass. Walk is probably the most overlooked gait - try these at the walk - harder than it looks.

I agree with RR - I love to do flat work out on the trails - outside of the ring. Hillwork is great as well.
