Chaz has been coughing now for about 16 days. Started off just a bit at the beginning of the ride, progressed to more while riding and then I stopped riding him because he was coughing so much. I have been keeping an eye on his temp and it's fine. He had some white, thick mucous from his nose after the last ride when he was coughing alot. He coughs while standing in his stall now. Otherwise he's alert, eating and drinking well and enjoying his turnout as usual. I did talk to my vet about it on the phone and she said to keep an eye on his temp and the discharge. She said it could be a cold which could take up to 3 weeks to resolve. Or, since he's 19 it could be the start of a respiratory tract alergy that is common with older horses. In thinking back he has often coughed for a week or so just a bit at the beginning of the trot, on and off over the past few years. You know 3 or 4 coughs when you start trotting and then off you go. And then maybe again 6 months down the road. I always think of it as a "confinement" cough and nothing more. Now I'm starting to wonder if that was the beginning of alergies. Just wondering if others have had colds that have lasted this long? and that have gone completely away after. Or should I get the vet out for testing for allergies? Aso would that require scoping or can blood tests do it? Edited by Black Tack, Jun 1 2009, 08:04 AM.

Isn't it spring up there? I'm not sure about the frozen North, but down here in Georgia the pollen capitol of the world, almost all our horses (and people!) get a little coughy, sneezy and wheezy in the spring when everything starts blooming. It usually isn't a problem and goes away on it's own once the air isn't yellow anymore. Tara does the warm-up cough too, and has for as long as I've owned her- just cough, cough, cough, snort and that's it. She's been checked out and scoped and my vet says there is nothing wrong. I had another vet tell me that type of cough is usually an artifact from a past bout of rhino. Jingles for Mr. Chaz- I hope it's nothing serious! Edited by tarragon, Jun 1 2009, 09:12 AM.

I had a pony who had Pnemonia and he never ran a temp. I had just bought him and thought "Great, he has heaves and I just got screwed. How the heck did the PPE miss this?" Turned out that the poor guy was very sick. Have your vet out to take a listen to his lungs, just to be on the safe side. I wound up having to take an emergency trip to Cornell, on a Sunday, when everything is double the price, since he was having trouble breathing. |

BT, Gunnar had a cough in his day! One year at Indio poor Mr G was showing him and he burst into a cough after he started his circle. They came back to the walk as Gunnar put his head down and gagged. Once it was over off they went! Victor H Vidal was the judge, always a benefit for Mr G!, so they got 2nd place with a score of 82! His was normally just awarmip cough but that year it was worse. My brain cannot remember the treatment we used but it was sort of like Kennel cough as a lot of the Indio horses had it that year (1998, which is why I cannot remember) He did get better!

That scared me into action Witchy and I told the vet (she boards at my barn) that I would give her a call at the office today to set up an appointment. Then I decided I should ride first and I had a great ride with even about 5 minutes of trot (with ONE cough) and a wee bit of canter. So, I was on cloud 9 thinking he's much better. Barn staff then told me that he had coughed alot on the way to his paddock this morning. However, given only 1 cough in a 40 minute ride I have to think that he's on the mend. Tarragon, it's spring and yes, lots of pollen in the air here too. That's why I was wondering if it's just a cold or possibly allergies starting to get worse as he ages. I'll keep an eye on him tomorrow and see how he is for my ride Friday. Geesh Gunnar, I could handle a cough if I were to receive an 82

Late to the party...just wanted to offer ***JINGLES***. I'm betting it's swine flu. It's all the rage and I know how Chazzer is about travelling with the "in" crowd. Seriously, hope he's all better now that it's been a few days!!

Me too BT.... I hope Chaz is on the mend! Win had a yucky dry cough and white gunk from his nose when I first got him. It cleared up on its own, though it did take a few weeks. Hugs and jingles to you guys!! |
