I have had good experiences. The chiro I use adjusts similarly to how you would manipulate a person, just with more force! He was a human chiro for a long time before getting involved in horses. He does a lot of atlas work. I also know a vet that is also trained in chiro and he uses rubber mallets, which is SO rough looking! The horses do feel better and more even after he does them though, so I guess it works!

My trainer's husband's dad was an equine chiropractor. Like any medical discipline, there are varying schools of thought about how the adjustments should be done. Dr. Bev London is a chiro who's local to both me and DQ, and while I like her a lot for herbal stuff, I am not a huge fan of her chiro adjustments. They're okay, but Dr. Emery's are way better. JMHO.

Dr. Martha Moses of Eclectic Equine in Virginia essentially gave me a new horse when she worked on Tip's back. If you can find a good chiropractor in your area I highly recommend having your horse looked at if you think he would benefit.

Very interesting!

What she did looked initially painful but then the horses just got this blissful look on their faces and lip licks and sighs.

It was amazing!!!

I use Allison Faber out of Richmond. Here is her website. http://www.fullcirclevet.net/index.html
She is low impact, and is really good. After adjustments, she will do accupuncture if necessary. I
highly recommend it at the very least once a year for all performance horses.

I have worked with Dr. Jim Renolds for several years. He was a human chiro for about 20 years before specializing in horses. I have seen chiropractic care make a big difference for the better in more than one of my horses throughout the years.

I have seen chiro really help, in some instances. I think a lot depends on the chiro, and the horse.

I would suggest making sure the problem is not stemming from the feet.. and also, maybe incorporate massage into the program. If you have a foot issue, or tight muscles, the chiro adjustments will not "stick" quite as well.

Flash is right. The chiropractor my barn uses often recommends massage after large adjustments, or he has this great machine that combines percussion and ultrasound therapy that is really great for relaxing sore or spasming muscles (I've tried it myself- amazing!). If the horse is already stiff and sore it's difficult for the adjustment to hold.

I think a good chiropractor can really make a huge difference in keeping a horse sound and comfortable, but the key is finding a good one.

I have a GREAT one, who happens to be a vet with a holistic "bend". She's also an FEI ranked Endurance rider (strong candidate for WEG '10), so she understands about keeping performance horses sound and happy; she's the one who found the adhesion in Bria's back that was likely causing the issues under saddle. I also use an REMT who is a dressage rider.

I had another chiro work on Bria once, and was no where near as impressed. Like anything, it totally depends on the practitioner!

My horse and I both get chiro'd regularly. My horse seems to respond favorably when done every so often. I myself get treated every week(no miracles-- my back still hurts)but it does help a little.
