Has anyone ever planted these before?

I planted them in a pot on my deck (first time Ive ever grown them) and didnt pay much attention to the seed packet. They have gone absolutely crazy from all rain. But they have grown into vines, and are climbing up my screen door and twisting all around themselves. Like, gone completely crazy mind of their own. I do NOT remember the packet picturing vines or mentioning that. Does anyone know if thats normal or if I got some sort of mutant seeds?

I've never planted them, but they can be an invasive species, at least here in the south. Various forms of them grow wild and they will self-seed themselves everywhere. If you do plant them be very careful of where you put them.

I've never seen them in a vine form, usually they grow about 2 feet high as a bushy sort of plant. Maybe some other type of vine seed got mixed in?

Onwego, your dahlias are gorgeous! Are they some of the Karma dahlias? They are one of my favorite flowers, and some of mine bloom every year from May to November.

Watch out with those Chinese Lanterns, although very pretty..... they can become very invasive! :jaw: Suggest if they try to move into your garden and out of their pots.... knock them back quick!

Love those Dahlias! :rose: One of my favourite flowers!

They are in a little pot on my little deck of my townhome. No real garden, so they cant go far. It was just a little seed packed that the SO and I picked up from Lowes. They are super busy, but then have vines coming from everywhere.

DO NOT go to sleep at night. They will morph themselves into your image, spit out a clone, kill you, then take over your life...and the WORLD!!!!

Sorry. I couldn't resist.

No expert here except to say the lanterns are gorgeous, but often the "lantern" like plants tend to be viney; we have some varieties of wild "lanterns" (nowhere near as pretty, sadly) and they climb my pine trees like crazy!). And I had all dahlias at my wedding. LOVE them!

Those grow wild here but they are yellow...we call them stinky vine because they stink when you cut them. I would get a trellis for them to grow on and keep them cut back.

Those Delias are beautiful I may have to get some of those...do they like sun or shade???

I'd suggest Border or Gallery Dahlias for the landscape. They are smaller (18"-30") bushier plants that are really prolific bloomers, mine bloom from May until frost. The more traditional Dahlias are much taller plants that need staking and only bloom for a short time.

This is one of my Gallery Dahlias just starting to bloom- I think this is "Rembrandt"-
