My horses were in for 2 days (Sunday-Monday) due to the rain. Then I would only let them out in the dry lot paddock yesterday and today, and threw them hay, since I don't want them galloping in the field, sliding in the mud, and bowing tendons, etc. (Don't ASK me how I know this from past experience) :psycho: So they ate their hay, and are now just gazing longingly at all the green grass in the field, and giving me evil looks when I stop by to check on them. Don't they know this is for their own good?? :teehee:

Tell them that all this lush green grass will make their tummies upset and mama knows best.

Not at the moment, as we've had one night of rain in 3 weeks and NEEEEED the rain desperately! But yes, we have to close the pastures in heavy rains, spring & fall and they are so miserable. I've never had any major incidents (knock wood!) but 3 thrown shoes this fall taught us all the evils of mud!

Good luck and send some rain to NY!

Duplo tried to buck me off yesterday to remind me how much he likes to go out. In his defense he'd been in almost a week because of the rain. He was FRESH.

Quattro, my 3 y/o, is pretty fed up with being kept up. I let him out/hand graze him/turn him out in the indoor as much as humanly possible, but I turned him out in there tonight and he was nearly psychopathic! He galloped figure 8s at top speed for almost 20 minutes straight! I'm starting to get a little worried he might manage to hurt himself even in there.

We are on day nine of no turnout. I have been walking and hand grazing my two that are boarded, and try to get them a little time in a paddock. It they'd just nicker a polite "thanks, mom" then roll and start eating, it wouldn't be too bad. But they are HORSES so that means they have to roll, run and/or toss a shoe before they settle down. Don't they know how to do it right???

It's frustrating for everyone, and the horses too. We want them to be happy and healthy, with no mud-induced injuries. A galloping horse can tear up grass, and sliding stops into fences are not my idea of equine fun. But the longer they stay in their stalls, the more problems when they finally do get back to regular turnout. Current forecast for our area is for thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow, then rain on Sunday and Monday. So if the paddocks need time to dry out after being saturated, we are looking at turnout maybe on Wednesday or Thursday. Except that there's rain in forecast for those days. Any ideas on how to handle weeks of no turnout?

We generally leave all ours out, they have large sheds, and our grass is pretty useless as it is. Central Virginia is red clay, grass and red clay do not mix... we just supplement with lots and lots and lots (did I mention lots?) of nice quality round bales. So most of ours get to stay out. A few do stay in, and we have been rotating them in the ring, which doesnt get slick, thank goodness. They are getting about 2 hours out each a day right now when it rains. Just long enough to run around and buck and carry on and get the kinks out. Granted, not the best on the ring footing, but its better then cranky locked in horses.

Somerset has been on stall rest since April 8, only going out once a day to hand graze for 20 minutes. This past week, it poured so instead of hand grazing he had to walk in the indoor. He tried to bite me, several times. :( Poor thing. He's only allowed out for 20 minutes a day and he can't even spend it doing something he enjoys. :(

Mine are out all the time, but Julio the mini donk clearly hates mud. The gate area is goopy mud right now, so when I call the boys in to eat, he wanders up to the gate, stops and looks at me, heaves a sigh, then picks his way through the mud with palpable disdain. Then he'll give me the look of, "okay, dammit, I crossed the River Kwai, take this damn grazing muzzle off." He gets one kibble for his trouble, then gets locked in the dry lot all day. :teehee:
