Since April of last year (Rolex... The Quietman and Frodo Baggins not counted) 8 horses have died and 6 riders have been killed or injured. I think that's for ALL levels of eventing, so no, *I* don't think it's slowing.

seems most of the injuries/fatalities started increasing in 2007. Was that the year of the format change?

I agree that eventing is inherently risky as a whole, but really, the numbers are STAGGERING compared to years past and the trend is continuing. Double and triple the serious injury/death is more than just a freak accident ratio.

I was fortunate enough to run the start box for the B (steeplechase) phase of a ** in Buffalo, Texas for the long format. It was truly MAGNIFICENT to see horses in their peak condition galloping by not feet from the box. There were over 120 competitors and only one injury to a rider that day. I would HATE to see eventing dissolved, but there HAS to be a change. Bring back the long format? Add a roads and tracks and steeplechase phase and shorten the actual "CC" portion? I would also like someone to do more research into these embolisms and ruptures and such (paging Dr. Jersey Fresh!!!). Why don't steeplechase horses suffer as many fatalities from these "rare diseases"? Or distance track horses? Really how RARE can it be if 2 horses per year or more are afflicted? I'm sure they occur but why not ads often as eventing? These are some things I would like answered for starters.

I'd be really interested to see records of horse fatalities for the last 30 years or so. I have to wonder if there really is an increase in the number of fatalities, or if it's just now that, thanks to the internet, we hear about each and every single one immediately and therefore it seems like more. I'm not saying there's not been an increase since switching to the short format, but before forums I think the only people who would know about a crash or collapse of anyone other than a top name rider would be people who were actually there, especially if were a horse doing the lower levels.

I've seen it before tarragon..let me see if I can find it.

I can't find it but will keep looking. There is a partial list (from 1997 or so on) in the link I posted. There is an image of The Quietman falling at Rolex so be warned.

Cause of death has been reported:

Dr Christiana Ober, the Canadian Eventing Team veterinarian, said King Pin suffered a hemorrhage of the large vessels in the abdomen, unrelated to any jumping effort or trauma. "This is a very rare condition and the actual cause is unknown," she said.

My condolences to Kingpin's team and to Mike. May Kingpin run in peace.

I am going to move this thread to the Eventing section.
