I just saw this too Flashy, glad to hear he's doing better.

Chaz gets a dose of Omeprezole in the springtime. New grass, fluctuating temps, etc are just too much for his tummy as well. About a month ago he wouldn't eat his carrots so I knew something was up. I gave him some Omeprezole and within 30 minutes he was back to eating so it was a really quick fix. He's just finishing up a month's worth.

He also gets a very low sugar feed and lots of carrots daily to help throughout the rest of the year.

Good luck with the move but I would keep an eye on his tummy if he's going to be grazing alot more. Once he's used to it , it sounds heavenly :cloud9:
Thanks BT! I've been thinking of doing a course of Omeprazole and perhaps will go ahead with it. Do you use tablets, compounded, gastrogard, ulcergard?

Also trying to reduce the NSC in his diet by quite a lot. The hay at the new place is better quality and I'm going to put him on a Ration Balancer and hopefully decrease the amount of grain he is getting by a lot as well.

A friend also recommended trying EquiPride so may give that a shot as well.

Thanks for the heads-up on the grass, too. I'm always worried about laminitis issues with grass but truthfully in Win's case I think his tummy is sometimes his biggest problem. He tends to have a sensitive gut.

I use compounded Omeprezole (as do all of the owners in my barn). I have read studies that it's not as effective as Gastro Guard but it does seem to do the trick and it's what I can afford (I just did my tax stuff and I was :spew: over how much I spend on chaz to keep him comfy and show sound).

I haven't heard of EquiPride?

I guess EquiPride is like a gut conditioner, supposed to have all kinds of good stuff in it for tummies. I've not tried it yet, like you I am attempting to keep my horsey spending on the straight and narrow!!

Where do you get your compounded omeprazole? Sorry for all the questions, I've never had a horse with gut issues!!

Try could try UGard as well... I put Bria on it and she got a lot friendlier, and she seems to have handled the diet change when we changed barns MUCH better.

I have to make a quick trip over the border to get it, but it's worth it. It runs $28USD for a tub that's supposed to last a month, but I get closer to 7-8 weeks out of it  (not that I'm complaining...)

FG, you will think I'm batsh-- nuts, but Standard Process Okra Pepsin E3 did wonders for my horse's gut. If you want to hear the whole story, PM me. Let's just say that $100 of herbs saved me a LOT of potentially thrown away cash on gastrointestinal supps. But I don't blame you if you don't want to hear it--I've mentioned it to several people on TOB and they always blow me off as a crazy talker. I guess they think it's too good to be true.

I think a lot of horses do have sensitive guts and also think a lot of them are so stoic you don't really notice symptoms. I talked to my vet about a course of Ranitidine for my mare last fall - the opposite time of year when the pasture was done and she was back on hay full time. She was very pissy for a week or so, which is sort of her normal emotion, just amplified a bit! My vet felt that Ranitidine was every bit as good as Ulcerguard when used properly and in the right circumstances. The main drawback of it is that it needs to be dosed 3x per day to be anywhere near as effective as the Ulcerguard, so if that's not possible it can't be comparable. But if it can be done, it has it's place in the spectrum of ulcer treatments & preventatives. I think my giant bottle was $25 and it was more than enough for a 7 day trial.

In my case, I saw no differences at all in my mare, which suggests that her behavior wasn't directly related to ulcers, although not necessarily that she doesn't have any ulcer issues. (OK, she's a bitch. I guess that's it!) Actually the vet thought she might have had a painful transitional heat cycle and/or was just hungry as she was refusing her hay and longingly pining for grass. She was markedly better in a few weeks time so its hard to know.

Anyway, just chiming in with another idea that will not break the bank, although not as easy to administer. We just started introducing our pasture and it's so fun to watch them gallop out when I throw open the gate. Unfortunately, my mare is very angry she can't go out all night and follows me around with her ears pinned. Luckily I know enough to know she won't actually bite me but she's pretty intimidating! By next week they should be out 8pm to 7am or so....if all goes well! :luck:

Hey TBF thanks for the heads-up on the Ranitidine. I will have to discuss that option with my vet. The 3 times a day dosing may be a bit of a challenge, but the BO at the new place may be more willing to do it than my current BO so I will check it out.

Your stories about your mare always make me giggle. I owned a very opinionated redheaded filly once upon a time and your mare reminds me of her. :) Funny girls, they are....

Flashy I get the Omeprezole from our barn vet. I pay about $140. Canadian for just short of a month's worth. I have heard of using UGuard after but haven't started that yet.

Jenny, I'm always happy to hear of things people find are working for their horses.

Flash I just saw this!

How is Win doing now?

When's the move scheduled? I would be tempted to not medicate and see what happens with him once you move and adjust his feed. The less hectic environment, all the grass and turnout, and reduced grain intake, may be enough. Course I'm always one to only go the medication route when all else fails - for both myself and my animals.

Hey there Bri.... he is doing ok. He seemed fine earlier this week but yesterday he was super spooky which is SO unlike him!

He has been going out in the big grass field at the current barn, with a group of geldings. He doesn't do so well in a group, he tends to get beat up on and chased around. He had a very good buddy who was much more dominant and that horse used to protect Win like you would not believe. He left 2 weeks ago, and it is since then that Win has been significantly more worried and nervous.

He moves on Sunday and I am thrilled.... at the new place he will be going out with just a few other horses, all older and quiet, so I think he will fit in a lot better.

Thanks for the continued good wishes. :) I will update with pics when he gets to his nice new home this weekend.

Wellll Mr. Win managed to get himself kicked in the knee today. He's got a baseball sized lump on the knee, but is relatively sound. I was pretty pissed, because a fellow boarder had seen him in a turnout situation I had explicitly asked the BM to avoid. I questioned the BM about it this afternoon and she laughed it off.

He is only moving 2 miles down the road and I am tempted to haul him tomorrow regardless of the injury... I am that annoyed at the current barn... Will have to see how it is in the AM. I'm pretty sure I'm looking at a vet bill this week. Sigh. Poor Win!

Aaargh! :argh: Sounds like this move can't come soon enough to protect our Win! Hope you don't need the vet, and if he's up to it...I agree...move him. He'll recover better if he isn't stalled and doesn't have to run away from bullies!

Sending big jingles!!!!!!!!!!! :jingles: :jingles:
