We are having an impromptu clinic here at our barn (in house only) with Jimmy Lee next week. My trainer asked if I wanted to do it and I said sure but then I thought maybe I should find out more info about him first. I would be riding my trainer's somewhat unorthodox (he's well um...a Tennessee Walking Horse, 15h, goes with his head in the air) horse that I love to death. But he in no way shape or form is a hunter. He can't even pretend. We only jump 2'3" to 2'6" in our lessons so that is another factor (I'm still coming back from 5 years of no lessons/no jumping).I thought about riding my own horse (my hopeful future hunter) who I just bought a month ago but he only does walk-trot and single trot poles and just started cantering under saddle. He doesn't really steer great either. We have been working hard with him, but I don't know how much I would get out of it since he is green as grass. So my question is, a) is he a good person to lesson/clinic with and if so,b) would I get anything out of it on a jumper or I should I ride my green bean hunter prospect? Thanks! |

Jimmy Lee is an excellent horseman and judges a lot and is a kind man--I think you would get a lot out of it. I would take your green bean--he might be able to help move it along. Good luck! |

Ride the baby. He'll understand that he's young and will be a great help. Edited to add- always take the opp to clinic with someone different. You'll learn something no matter what. Edited by justmagic, Apr 2 2009, 06:15 PM.

Jimmy is awesome. You will like him. He is patient and very informative. I agree with riding the baby - I love having different, good quality eyes on my horses. And he is good with the young ones and will have some good things for you to do with him. And try to spend a few minutes with him getting some tips and tricks after he has watched your horse. And ask TONS of questions at the end of your lesson. He can tell you about a TON of good exercises. As for you learning, just watch every lesson you can. |

Thanks for all of the replies! Well, I talked to my trainer and she wants me to ride the jumper this time and ride my horse next time (he comes to visit a few times a year). I would love to ride my horse, but she said that he isn't quite ready (we just started cantering under saddle last week). So I will ride the TWH and I'm sure we will have a blast and I hope I can learn a few things to apply to my own horse. I am really nervous because the two girls I am riding with have both shown 3'6" consistantly and show at the 3' to 3'6" level. I jump 2'3" to 2'6" in my lessons and am just starting to gain my confidence back after taking several years off from jumping etc during grad school. I trust the horse 110% but just not myself. |

So we had our clinic session last night and I had a great time! He is so nice and the whole experience was a huge confidence booster for me. He emphasized the basics and we worked on very simple exercises like a gymnastic (keeping your horse collected to the first jump) and then trot in canter out, bending lines and a canter in trot out. The canter in-trot out line was a challenge for me and the TWH since he loooves to go forward out of the lines but we did well. I love that horse and he was a good choice to ride for me. Next time I hope to ride Ty since he will be further along. My trainer called this morning and asked how i liked it and I said I really enjoyed myself. She said that after I jumped one of the courses, Jimmy turned to her and said "this girl does a really nice job with him" . This is horse is blast to ride but can be a bit tough, but has helped me so much. I know I still have a lot to improve on but I felt pretty good about the whole thing. Here are a few videos. The first is one exercise where we had to trot in get 7, then canter the gate to the plank in a broken line. Everyone else jumped the last two at angle but I did a sharp bend since my horse is pretty handy and it worked out. The first time we jumped into the trot in line, Jimmy looked at me (on my 15h mount) and said "7 should be no problem for you, the rest of you will need to whoa". Yeah, we did it in 6 the first time through opps! I got 7 the rest of the time. Feel free to critique, point out things on me but not him. But please be nice!![]() This one is the first attempt at canter in, trot out. most of us asked too late for the trot, so the third video shows after we steadied in and landed and immediately asked for the trot. ![]() ![]() Edited by Jersey Fresh, Apr 9 2009, 07:48 AM.

Yay! I love in the last video for a split second when you pull him to the trot his TWH side comes out. So cute! He looks so proud of himself haha. "Hey mom, look what I can do!" He looks like a really cool horse to ride. |
