OK I went to make a hard boiled egg. HAve made hundreds of them thru the years, got out my little pan put water in. took one egg out of carton, put it in the water it went right on its end! :o I stared at it.. I picked it up and put it back in.. again it did it. Eggs lay on there side in the water.
OK Got a second egg. SAME THING! Showed hubby. He said huh~
Got a third egg.. SAME THING. WHAT the fruit bat?? Try to knock them down and they pop back up on end like they are magnetized. Seriously what is up. I made a hard boiled egg. out of this batch two days ago and it was fine. They are not expired. I have a whole nuther dozen to try from a diferent carton. I have not tried yet. Just went and looked at it again, ITs still sitting bolt upright!

Well I cracked 2 open they were perfectly fine. Ate one and made hubby one.
Tomorrow I will put them in the water and see what they do. :teehee: :teehee: :teehee: :teehee: :innocent: :psycho:

At the equator they stand straight up, but michigan is not the equator though. Maybe something with the earths rotation, axis, or gravetational pull this time of year??

when eggs go bad, they float. So you probably had a batch on the verge of spoiling.

But it takes something like A YEAR for eggs to go bad.

It was weird.. They were not floating they were standing on end, small side down. And they were not old eggs. either batch.
I have used eggs way past their sell by date and bever seen this. IT was fun anyway. LOL

I have never heard of the equinox thing, but I copied this from somewhere:

There is a small air pocket in the large end of the egg. When the egg is fresh, the pocket is only about 1/8th of an inch deep and as large around as a dime. As the egg ages, however, it loses both moisture and carbon dioxide — shrinking — so that the size of the air space increases. And the size of the air space determines the buoyancy of the egg.

So if you submerge a very fresh egg in water, it will lie on the bottom. An egg that is a week or so old will lie on the bottom but bob slightly. An egg that is three weeks or so old will balance on its small end, with the large end reaching for the sky. And a bad egg will float.

Oh interesting OTF... But darn, I was hoping for magic eggs, or Oh I dont know spring gnomes playing tricks.

Well, you made it from breakfast to now, so I guess you'll live. (I mean that as a funny, Sanny.)

We have fresh eggs here, but I don't eat very many really. People tell us they can really tell the difference. I know it's very difficult to peel fresh hardboiled eggs, so when I make egg salad, I hardboil them, then I cut them in half and scoop out the cooked egg.

Eggs do last a long time, and I've heard that the ones from the store are already about 3-4 weeks old...don't know if that's true or not.

I didn't want to say anything, but I thought I remembered something about old eggs too...

Trouble is, just because you BOUGHT the eggs yesterday does not mean that they are fresh. ;)

I usually buy "egglands best" or another brand that actually DATES the eggs. They're more expensive, but at least I know the little liquid chickens inside are fresh...ish.

Well, if you guys would just move to central VA, I'd give you fresh eggs from (relatively) happy chickens. They get a few hours outdoors every afternoon to go "shopping" for whatever bugs, etc., they can find and when it's close to dusk, they go back into their house for the night. :)
