I am very sad about this today. How many times have we all fallen off a horse, or fallen on a ski slope and been fine? It makes you think how precious everyday is.

It just seems so shocking, her being on a beginner slope in a ski lesson, a bump on the head, and wham.. you're dead.

Sure makes me want to wear my helmet every time I am on a horse even at a walk.

Very sad, especially for her family.

I seriously doubt a helmet would have made any difference at all in this case. While it's certainly good to be cautious when warranted, some things are just freak accidents beyond our control. You can't live your life in fear...

I'm at work and just spoke with a neuro surgeon about this case. He said there was most likely an AVM in this case. Essentially, a preexisting condition that caused this, seeing that she walked away from the initial fall and started to bleed a few hours later. You can google AVM if you have the interest.

BH2 the autopsy report apparently said no pre-existing condition, or at least they're not releasing it if there was one. They ruled it blunt trauma. Is it possible that some things don't show up on the reports or are masked by the "injury"?

Thanks Jaci, I remember her now ! I did not know she was a rider.. I am assuming that only because folks mentioned a helmet. I never watch the news.. :innocent: OK never mind just read for comprehension! ;)

I agree it's really sad. So unexpected. I am interested why you think a helmet would not have helped in this case Jilli? I think they are a great idea for skiers.

Helmets can't protect you from everything. There's INTERNAL concussion too (brain hitting the INSIDE of the skull), not saying that was the case here as they've put out several diffferent reports on this one. The first ones were stating that, "nothing contacted her head and vice versa" leading one to believe that she had a violent head snap with interior concussion. Who knows...

It may have helped some, just in absorbing the impact, but then as Jaci said... maybe not.

It's just very sad and tragic. She was young and with 2 boys.

I hit my head really hard one time in 2nd grade on the monkey bars. I was sent home and they watched me. I hit my head in the front... not the side though. I did fall on the ground and had a big lump and headache but no damage.

The temple or side of the head is worse.

If people had tours of hospital brain injury units at any hospital, they would be more vigilant about helmet use. Not every closed head injury is preventable, of course, but helmets are a good thing. Dealing with patients with head injuries is frightening. Dealing with their families is worse. It's so hard to see a familiar face, with a new personality (very often a hostile one). I did a short stint with head injury patients. So sad.

I hope the 2 sons do ok. How sad to lose mom at such an important point in their lives.
