If this is not in the right place feel free to move it...

Dh has agreed that I can get another horse.. And this spring we will put up at least shelter and barn. He mentioned that he would make it large enough for 2 beasties just incase ( dt is retured).

So ive been crusing around the various sites looking. I have even been looking on craigs list. I started out looking just incase dt were to show up on one of them. but now been looking for both.

Dh has set some parameters on the horse like has to be sound when it arrives or you go look at it.. Ok reasonable.. He doesnt care what breed or gender but would pefeer not a stallion which I can agree with kinda sorta... He would like me due to my body falling apart that it be a steady eddie close ot beginner level steady eddie.. He doesnt care how big as long as I can get up onto it with no major prolems. He would also like me to get an 'aged' horse. Course he hasnt a clue what aged really means.. When asked he said over 6 or 7...
He was looking for something else the other day and has yet to say how or why he came across a really aged ( 19) gelding. Tb never raced, not reg. ( not that it make much of a diffreance the horse cant read hte papers) used by a kid in 4h does some dressage and lower jumping like 2'6"... I hesitate to really get wowed over this horse because of the age chances are he has topped out at how big he can jump and remain sound. And I ribboned out of the 2'6" level a long time ago a really long time ago like 1981... I asked the powers that be if I could drop down in level when I returned to horses after some time off.. Unfortionality however the same people are still incharge of hte pha here and clearly remember me and my wench of a horse.. and flatly said no you cant you ribboned out a long time ago... So that means I would have ot go to at least the what is it called adult ammies.. which is 3' or is it 3'3" ?

Now for my question.. Do you think it would be fair to the horse at his age to see and perhaps take him to the 3' level. As far as I can gather form the advert and the email dh fowarded to me he is sound and has no problems in that catagory... but he is a steady eddie and an 'easy ride' according to dh the price is right..

thanks..

Usually horses of that age are stepping down. If you could build up to three foot on a 19 year old, it would probably be short lived. I am not sure if you are referring to your local association or bigger shows; but most rated shows have Pre-Adult which anyone can go in and that is 2'6".

Go look at the horse. Sometimes goals can be adjusted for the right horse.

I wouldn't bother if I were you. The horse won't take you where you need/want to go.

There's something else out there, keep looking.

I agree with Won. Your goals can be adjusted if the horse is right. How long has it been since you have shown? Is it realistic that you are going to walk into the 3 foot ring? Although 19 is older, it really depends on the horse and how he's been ridden/treated along the way.

Its been a few yrs since I ahve walked into the show ring. If I gave the impression I wanted to walk right back into the 3' level no not if I can help at least not right away.. like maybe 6-9 mths give or take... it but the local association might have a thing or two to say about it.

It was the local pha and one of their divisions I was talking about. I looked it up it is low adult which iirc is maybe 3' it might be 2'9" it has been a while since i thougt of that division...

I would think that this would be a 'relearning' process for me.. Not so much that i would spaz by riding but my body has changed a bit since I last went into the show ring. Heck I may not step foot into it again I really havent decided.. Dh is supportive of the idea if that is what i want o do he just wants me to be on a nonspazattack horse..

while I can do many things and once I getinto that show mode everything else is just there ifthat makes any sense but with 2 kids ( one in college) a house to take care of, 4 dogs, 2 cats, until I get my legs again steady is the way to go for me.

Thanks for hte opinions.. Will have to talk more with dh about this and see how he really feels bout the entire thing..
Or if he is just saying this to make me happy though will be misery for him.. kwim..

Very true. The horse I ride, Orion, is 19 or 20 and he still does 3' just fine...this after a broken splint bone and surgery, a significant shoulder injury and a broken radius about a year ago. He's a hooligan and lives hard...but he seems to have nine lives. The years are starting to catch up with him and he is starting to take some maintenance (Adequan, etc) to do 2'9" - 3' with me once a week. Riding him you'd still never guess he was that age...

BUT...it really depends on the horse. I wouldn't expect an older horse to move back up the ranks. If it was capable, why isn't it doing it now?

And if you've been out of the ring for a long time and not jumping much, I would imagine it would take you some time to get back to doing 3'. Does this horse have enough jumps left to help get you back up the ranks and stay sound?

WOW, Snack, Orion sounds like he does have 9 lives! Some horses have so much heart that it makes up for any limiting factors in their bodies. There was an old stallion Reipo, retired at the farm JTM was at a few years ago. He had been in the olympics and won a Bronze at Seoul with Ashley Holzer. the vet said that he should not have been able to go that far based on his physical limitations but he had such a huge heart and such determination that he did it. What a valiant guy - he was very cool :cloud9:

Sorry for the side track horseless.

I was just thinking that if you are limited to showing in the 3 foot ring.... and it's been awhile since you jumped that high .....and with a new horse .......that it might take a bit of time to get back there. Even a year or two is going to make that horse in it's 20s and possibly not have much time in that ring once you get there. On the other hand, if he's a really good guy and fun to ride and seems pretty sound then maybe you could have some safe and fun riding time with him.

I would spend any money I had for a new horse on an attorney to fight the issue with DH. I really would. This is ridiculous. They STOLE your horse! I know it's not foremost on the DA's calendar but if you hire someone to work on the case, they will get you relief much faster. I couldn't sleep at night not knowing what had become of my horse. If you need some attorney recommendations where you are, if I know anyone I will pass along the info. I am so ANGRY that you haven't gotten him back yet! If the DA can't make the wheels turn fast enough, hire someone who can!
