Ridem'....that happened to my mom! She told me she wanted to remove her own head. The pain makes me want to puke just thinking about it....no worries, i will not be using a straw. i have figured though, if I put the gauze in my mouth by the socket with no tooth, and bite down....and can smoke without putting too much pressure on the socket....Don't laugh....I work at a job in which I get screamed at on the phones all day. Due Dilligence for SallieMae. Oye.

Besides the NO STRAWS, you really don't want to smoke. I've smoked after extractions (when I smoked) and the two I had after I stopped smoking absolutely healed the fastest - even my recent one, which occurred the day before I did awards at a AA show for 5 days. Not quite the level of activity and talking my doc had ordered (but I was very mellow the first 2 days as the 100 mg of demerol for the pulling wore off).

Remember that smoking carries a similar risk of dry socket to using a straw, and you don't want to go there. Even when I was far too active last fall, I used fewer meds and healed faster when I didn't smoke. So my advice to you is to try not to smoke, and take your pain meds as prescribed - you want to stay ahead of the pain. And there are no awards for being a tough one and skipping pain pills, only headaches and jaw pain. Spoken from experience.

Wishing you all the best. Happy healing. :jingles:

What a coincidence - I had a tooth removed yesterday as well.

I just went to the grocery store and this is what I bought:

ice cream, eggs, mac n cheese, soup, yogurt, yogurt smoothies, mashed potatoes, pudding and applesauce. I'm supposed to stick to a soft diet for 2 weeks. That just sounds insane to me! My sister recommended that I make smoothies, but honestly, I just don't have the patience! I'm not feeling too terrible, but not too great either. I made the mistake this morning of taking my pain meds on an empty stomach. Boy was that stupid. I still don't feel right and I haven't taken anything since 7:30!

Hopefully we will both make a quick recovery!

Thanks V!

coriander, is that why my head hurts? Not taking the pain meds as I should? I just stood up to take a shower and ended up throwing up blood and applesauceish stuff, not fun. It's not bleeding as bad now. I think i'm sitting this one out from work and letting myself rest again today, then try to work friday and sunday to make the most up as I can.

Lion.....those are some good suggestions! Which tooth was it? What pain meds do they have you on? I feel crapy, but I'm a wimp.

Ok...I'm off to get my dentist to reprint a reciept, then McD's for a shamrock shake and some b&cheese soup, which I will eat at a luke warm temp....that should be some protein....oye. I'm a baby. lol

It's my "T" tooth. Best way to describe is lower right jaw -first molar. It was still my baby tooth and was cooperative enough to have fused to the bone in my jaw. Thanks. Just great. Plus, I also got an implant put in so there was a whole drill and screw in a metal piece into my jaw process. That was fun, really.

I've just got tylenol 3. if I get desperate I've got some percoset left over from my csection, but I'm not going to take it before I get the dr's ok. Who knows what mixing those 2 could do? I actually haven't even needed anything since 7:30. I'm not particularly tough, but I do HATE taking painkillers. I don't like not feeling like myself. The only time I might need it is to sleep since last night was just horrible. I did take off work today. It hasn't stopped the emails from coming in, but I'm getting better at ignoring work emails on my blackberry. (except for you of course V) ;)

Oh, the other thought I had - ensure drinks for protein. I'm thinking you can buy them at the grocery store? Or something along those lines.

ETA - I've edited my statement about ignoring emails in an effort to not offend anyone who might be lurking and reading the boards and emailing me! :nyah: :woot: :nyah: :woot: (even though they claim to not read the boards much lately!)

TD, what everybody else said sounds like good advice, esp. chocolate pudding and milkshakes with a spoon. I hope you get over the rough spots quickly and don't have to work on the weekend. :jingles:

Black Tack, ummmm, exactly what is "Booster Juice?" Sounds like a good name for a sweet tropical fruit drink with a lot of rum in it to me. So....I guess I answered my own question.
Ooops, guess that's a Canadianism :innocent: They are shops where you order a smoothie type drink - there's loads to choose from and then add in different proteins, etc so that you have energizing or relaxing or.... They are expensive but extremely yummy.

Sorry, I didn't realize they were Canadian, silly me.

Coriander, that sounds really worrisome. Glad to hear it's under control now. We women have to hold on to as much bone as we can

Hey guys. I had a tooth taken out yesterday, the upper jaw, last molar on the left side. And today I feel like I've been hit by a train. The whole left side of my face throbs and my sinus is all messed up. Unfortunately because I missed yesterday and my job works on a stats system, as in I have to be there to stay up in the stats, resolve the accounts, therefore making the bonus, I gotta go today. I have vicoden, and it's lovely, but I'd rather not get reliant on that.

Enough whining, I was just wondering what it is that I can eat? I've been doing applesauce, and mashed taters, and noodle soup, but I'm worried that the noodles are gonna get stuck in the hole. Any other suggestions? It feels like it's still draining.

L
You might be able to manage a very soft bread sandwich with Tuna or something like that. Put ice on your face if it hurts, in a baggie or a cloth bag... It will help with the pain.

When I was a kid I had 10 teeth pulled, at different times. One time they pulled 4 molars out at one time. They wanted my permanent teeth to grow in so they could put braces on sooner. I also had all 4 wisdoms out at one time.

So.... I ate milkshakes, soft pudding, I found hot stuff to be bothersome. You can always get some slimfast shakes, those are pretty good and fill you up.

Sorry you are going through this.. it sucks. I hate the dentist.

Feel better soon. :rose:

I ate stuffing, extra soggy. Kind of gross, but the bread will fill your stomach up.

This thread is really not making me want to get my wisdom teeth out :shoot: I have one that's come through now, and the dentist said he could take it out with just numbing stuff if I didn't want to go ahead and have all 4 done at once. He said the sooner I do it, the better, because if I wait awhile the roots will calcify and it'll be harder to get the teeth out.

Anyway. I hope you guys feel better!

One word. Tiramisu! Since you're going to Wegman's anyway, hit the prepared dessert case. Oh yeah, and get some chocolate mousse too. :innocent:

You sound like me. I only had 5 baby teeth fall out naturally, they yanked all the rest of them - most 2 or 4 at a time. They also pulled 4 permanent teeth (I have a small mouth so there wasn't room). The worst was when I was in 4th grade and had molars & the permanent teeth pulled - they did each side of my mouth separately and took two permanent & two baby molars at the same time, so I had to go through it twice.
I've also had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled at once.

This is one of the reasons why I'm terrified of the dentist.

Holy moly.....all 4 wisdom teeth out at once?! And I bitching about one molar....that puts it in perspective....

It's been great advice from everyone, thank you all, I'm slurping down a yummy shamrock shake and I have soup, I feel better.

All 4 wisdom teeth of mine are impacted, and that means I will indeed have to have them all out, if they put me under I'll be fine. I think that have to for that, right?

Lion, you're stronger then I am! I hope you keep feeling ok.:)

I had all 4 wisdom teeth out at once and several were impacted. I was numbed but awake. It really wasn't all THAT bad. Thankfully. I had (at the time) the very BEST dentist on earth. Which probably had something to do with my speedy recovery. I also like to think that I am relatively tough about pain (and I have very bad circulation which prevents me from feeling hot/cold like normal people-- potentially pain too?)

I remember eating a LOT of ice cream and frozen yogurt. Even after it stopped hurting. Why not milk it while you can?! ;)

You'll get through it! Better out with those bad teeth then IN, causing pain and messing with the good teeth!!!

P.S.- Linz DO NOT SMOKE until you're healed. For one, it's no good getting those nasty chemicals into an open wound. Second, the sucking motion can cause similar problems as the straw. Third, I don't want anything bad to happen to you-- maybe this is a little bump you need to think about quitting?!
