I's driving me nuts, and I can't find what I need in google. And I can't remember basic HS physics/math. :innocent:

Question:

Calculate the distance travelled, in meters, of a car that has gone from 0 km/o to 100 km/h in 10.8 seconds. Assume that the track is flat and there are no other factors (i.e. windspeed)...

THANK GOD I TEACH PRE-K...our math consists of M&M's and goldfish...SORRY Gold Sea Kittens...

GOOD LUCK...I only went as high as Algebra II

I can't wait to hear the answer...

Hmmm. I'm arguing a traffic ticket. Maybe if I counted it in MM's they'd just think I was nuts and tell me to go away? :teehee:

You should do a stokeometry equation buy converting the km into miles per hour and go from there...

AHHHHH - That's where I was going wrong. Now the numbers make sense. Unfortunatly they don't help me...

I'm no math guru by a long shot (that's why I'm a lawyer!), but I have you going .3 km in 10.8 seconds. What I did was convert the hour to 3600 seconds and set up this basic proportional equation: 100/3600 = x/10.8. So x is (100 x 10.8)/3600, which equals .3 km. .3 km equals 300 meters . . . well, actually, it would be less than that, b/c you wouldn't be going 100 km/hour for that whole 10.8 seconds. Oh well . . . that's why I ain't no rocket scientist :lonely: .

Delia, you lost me at .3 km........

Ibex, I'm not great at math and I know it's not nice to answer a question with a question, but the main concern here is: Was there a monkey on the hood of the car? That will have a significant bearing on the answer!

P.S. I hope you successfully argue your way out of this ticket; if so, go buy a pound of M&M Peanuts and send me the bill!!! Better yet, get Delia to come out and handle this matter for you! (Now I'm in deep doo-doo!)

OH, I love math but it has been a long time since I had to remember Newton's laws, etc...! :)

I got 140m, after calculating an avg acceleration using a = (v2 - v1)/t and then using s (distance) = v1t + 1/2at2.

Best wishes on getting out of the ticket...let me know if it works, I always need a plan B next time I get stopped. :) My client got me a cute bumper sticker this year, it says, "But officer, that wasn't a uturn, it was a rollback", she knows me too well!

There's some equation like distance = vsquared/2a where v is velocity and a is acceleration. Then you have to mess around with units and I haven't done physics in 15 years so I can't make heads nor tails of it!!

Yup, using that, you get 145m vs the 140m, b/c I calculated avg acceleration...:)

Oh, the link helped me get the answer, it just wasn't an answer that was going to help me out at all! :innocent:

Basically last winter I was pulled over for doing a speed that under the conditions my car is incapable of doing. It was coming over the top of a hill and I think they clocked the guy who passed me (I turned on half way up the hill; if you have a running start it's pretty easy to be going that fast by the top), but I was easier to pull over.

Off to argue the ticket today! I have the tech specs on my car, photographs of the hill, and a copy of the weather report (deep and snowy - I was in 4WD which makes acceleration even harder).

There were no monkeys on the hood of the car, but given that I live in Lotus Land I'm sure that even if there were, the officer had seen stranger things. :teehee:

Wish me luck!
