People are really getting hacked on Facebook. These people get into people's friend lists, send messages from "friends" to you with viruses. I spent all morning fixing my computer after I got one. I wonder why the can't keep these idiots from doing this? It's really bad on there. My mom has had her computer hacked and infected like 2-3 times. You would think Facebook as large as it is, could get better firewall and hacker protection. Ebay is bad too.. my BF has been hacked several times.

Just don't trust the wall posting from friends if it's an ecard or link. It might be a virus. The one I got was for a valentines ecard. The website opens a trojian virus. It appears harmless in the wall post, and is very easy to get sucked into. The messages come from friends on your list... but they didn't send them, the hacker did. Scary stuff. I spent all morning fixing my machine. I restored it and ran virus software and I am ok. Be careful! |

Well, it's almost impossible not to click a link here or there, but if it's from some friend on Facebook, one that you don't know that well, and it's a valentines card... don't click it. Check with the person before you click, you can always message them. These hackers are really causing problems. I wonder what the joy is in just f-ing with people's computers. What's the gain they get from this?

Facebook makes me a bit nervous sometimes. All my friends post like 10,000 pics of their kids on there.... I am very leery of posting any pics of Little FG. I mean, there ARE privacy settings, but how safe are they really?? Anyone have any idea? Am I way too paranoid?? |

FG - You bring up a point that Mr. BH and I discuss very often about Facebook. While I do enjoy catching up upon what is going on with friends, I am really just not interested in whether or not they just visited the bathroom. These blow by blows of peoples lives ---isn't it a bit self-indulgent? Or is it just me? |

You know, I have not gotten any virus and I click on whatever seems to interest me. My secret? I run my machine under Linux and the viruses and trojans just won't work. It is very hard to take control of a Linux machine from outside. To answer why people want to do this, some are just amused but more are interested in using your machine as a zombie to send out their spam and their phishing messages. |

Yeah BH... I agree with you.... Hubby and I got on facebook to keep in touch with family and friends in the UK. But I just don't trust the privacy settings, and am not sure how hard/easy it is for someone to work around them. It is great to be able to share pics and info but I feel like I need to be wary of how much is displayed, even WITH the privacy setting enacted. I think for awhile no one could understand why I posted horse pics, and not pics of Little FG.... lol.... as if I was some horrible mom or something..... really quite the opposite!! I cringe when I see friends with public pages, and thousands of pics of their kids, and all sorts of info.... it is scary. Too many weirdos out there!! Edited by FlashGordon, Feb 17 2009, 06:55 AM.

Well my take on face book is its like high school all over again. There are people on their you hope to never talk to and yes you can ignore them but chance are if they are friends with other people you have they are still reading into your life... Also its a popularity contest... How many people have you befriended??? Seriously do you know all 1000 of those so called "friends"!!! Oh and what about the those stupid apps and games. No I don't want to be your best girl/guy, receive a gift from you, pass a drink, or join you cause... Now I got to deal with hackers on top of it...

I've had a pretty good experience so far with FB. I went to 4 High Schools because of my dad's job stuff, and I have reconnected with friends from each one. I have also reconnected with a bunch of riding buddies from the West Coast. I am careful though about pictures and stuff. I have a lot of animal photos, horse photos etc, but not many of me, and I don't put my photo on the profile pic...just a horse or dog or something. That way a friend is the only person can see them. It does seem though that the hackers can really easily break into FB and get into people's lists and stuff. Ebay also has this problem. I wonder why if Linux is better for this... to protect the data....why don't FB and Ebay use Linux or Unix or something else? Facebook is now doing something about keeping peoples information... I heard it on the news. That makes me nervous too with the way people are abusing personal id info. The internet is truely a scary thing, and this stuff gets out of control so fast... and there is such difficulty in policing it, since the hacker could be in Nigeria or some other place.

Gringa, I suspect the folks at Ebay simply are too cheap to hire good programmers and they don't want to spend what it would cost to make any changes or improvements. I might suspect the same about Facebook but have never used it or even looked there. I asked my DH about why Linux is so much safer and he (tried to) explain it to me. There are many bugs in Windows and they don't get fixed very fast. Those bugs allow nair-do-wells to exploit the weakness and make your computer run a program which they have arranged to download, often without you even knowing you downloaded the program. Linux various versions (and there are several) have among them quite literally tens of thousands of volunteer programmers who take in the reports of bugs and figure out what is wrong and fix it. Bugs tend to be fixed faster in Linux because there are many who work on it and quite a few of them are crack programmers who just do the Linux work for fun in their spare time. In addition, Linux programs are not generally run from root while my DH says that most Windows users are running from root. One easy way to protect your computer at bit is to use Firefox rather than Internet Explorer or Outlook Express. Firefox can be downloaded free at www.mozilla.org and Linux versions are also free or can be purchased for around $2. My DH is one of the many who maintain Linux, he works on the debian version. |

Aww. I love Facebook. Though i do have friends that updates their status every 10 minutes or so it seems. I've seen some of these viruses in action too. Luckily, they've been sent by people I don't usually talk to or are worded in such a way that I know the messages are bogus.
