I only have these three photos from my past / early childhood with our Mexican Burro "Pepi".
But for OTF ;) , and others whom understand the world of any form of "Bray"... LOL... Here be the photos. And there are some good stories about our Mexican Burros for sure. I had my first take off / wild ride on "Pedro" and got pinned beneath him at the end. Pedro was Pepi's dad.
And Pepi, as he stayed as a family member, became quite the escape artist and visitor of nearby farms, much to the dismay of my mom who always was the first home and had to lead him back. Usually tied to the back of her Corvair station wagon and proceeding home at three mph with ton's of "brays" from one disgruntled burro. But, mom was an avid animal lover..., and she never scolded Pepi for his outings... But dad did get the "Build a better fence" lecture from time to time.

This one you saw, myself at about 7 years old with Pepi to a cart.

This was full grown Pepi.

And this is my favorite photo, myself and the fuzzy burro, at his corral.

The photos are very old, I had to work with them, especially the last just to make them scan & be visible. And somewhere, within the family, we do have some more photos I am sure. For we had a sleigh and a saddle for Pepi also.

Yay, Alan, you truly are a longear fan! LOVE, LOVE your photos of Pepi....just look at that face in the last photo (his, not yours, :nyah: ). I think you did a marvelous job getting those photos on the computer, and I really appreciate seeing them. You got a good early childhood education from your donkeys, didn't you? Patience, caution, humor, how to learn by watching, how to get out from under a donkey........

Speaking of escapes, today I went to feed the cows in back and I noticed several imposters in the cow pasture. FIVE donkeys found a hole in the fence and decided to take a vacation; the other three weren't quite so daring and stayed where they belong. So I grabbed a few halters, caught them, and we threaded our way through the cows and calves somewhat nervously (them, not me) and made it through the gate.

Speaking of escapes, today I went to feed the cows in back and I noticed several imposters in the cow pasture. FIVE donkeys found a hole in the fence and decided to take a vacation; the other three weren't quite so daring and stayed where they belong. Well, we had no electric fences back then. Just the three rail fence made from trees. The rail bars ( of the gate ) he learned to slide, so we then tied them with twine. Then he would chew through the twine, and then slide them over. Ok, then we fashioned notches in the rails, grappled them with chains. His answer, go to other posts, grab & shake them till a rail un-nailed... and he was off again. LOL

If you notice, in the paddock, was a huge swing set. Part of the summer camp's playground. And in the summer, the gate was open all day, and Pepi would roam around the camp, following the campers. Along with other summer pets, for the camp season. Over the years, we had goats, heifers, pigs, ducks, geese, anything a farmer would loan us for the summer. The animals became part of the camp for the summer, and roamed free throughout the day. Then penned at night, to be let out again the following day.

Originally, we had a pair of burros for the summer, Kickie & Pedro. Then from them, along came Pepi. Pepi stayed as our's... The parents went home after the summer season. And the fun for many years had begun. Pepi in time, pulled a cart, a sleigh. He once got drunk on apples... you talk about one woeful bray he called out on that episode. Oh yes, I remember well the long ear antics of burros... LOL
