RNB, I said that too, but look where it got me! Sing Mia Song, I got your address and will make a copy of all my hoof stuff on Monday and send it to you. It includes some stuff on treating White Line too, but some donkey people use bleach successfully. I'll dig that up and PM you with what they've done. Julio does look a little on the pudgy side. Does he have any thickening on either side of his neck near the top? That's where they start collecting fat (jennets more so than geldings). You want to be able to feel his ribs a bit under the fuzz. What I've finally figured out is that their bellies should not have a rounded look (profile shot); it should appear straight and even, not much of a curve. I'll try to find a couple of photos. They are VERY easy keepers but also quite good at convincing you that they are actually starving to death. The little handful of grain will help you catch him, but he probably doesn't need the calories. Is he about 33-34" tall? Did someone shave part of his LF leg? The more 1 on 1 "good" time you spend with him, brushing, lots of talking, picking up feet, etc., the easier he'll be to catch. It takes time to develop trust with a donkey, but once you do, he'll go anywhere with you. If he puts himself in park, or appears to be cautious about something, let him stand and think for a moment. I'm doing this with Orphan Amy, who is leary of walking into the barn. I sat down on the floor and she walked to me. Then I moved farther in and sat down again and she came to me. I think "making myself small" helps...that and the little carrot piece she gets when she complies. As you know, catching and haltering for the vet, the farrier, isn't such a fun time. But if you ALSO do it for "fun" things, they don't just associate it with medicine, shots or trims. If you do something "interesting" with Puzzle on a lead (walk over rails, a tarp, any silly stuff), Julio will want in on it and will learn by watching and may even show off by doing it on his own. Great news that Rudy is introducing himself! An excellent book is "Caring for Your Miniature Donkey" by Bonnie Gross. If you have some $ to squander on it, it's well worth it. We used to give a copy to each new donkey owner. http://www.web-donkeys.com/products.php?cat=5 I'm still unable to get the Julio schoolyard song out of my head!!! |

He most certainly does!! And Bucky (trainer's evil donkey) has fat pads everywhere. I do NOT want Julio to wind up with fat pads! He definitely has a belly, and he and Puz can go into the "Diet Center" paddock together. Puz also wears a grazing muzzle in summer. I'll have to measure him to see just how big he is--Pardon Me is coming over tomorrow to cook with me, and she's already agreed to hold him while I check out his teeth to see if he has sharp edges.
You know, you're the second person to ask that from the picture! I think it's just a trick of the light, plus his downy underpinnings that make it look that way. I've been spending lots of time finding his itchy spots and rubbing on him--he's going though a little "yeah, you're not so hot" phase where he's a little standoffish with me. All my horses have to do carrot stretches in order to get their morning treat. He was buying into this, but today would only do one side. I don't know if this is "screw you, I'm not jumping through your hoops, you silly human," or if his teeth are hurting him. Thanks so much, OTF! I shall cut out the grain and order the donkey book. They really are a whole 'nother species, aren't they? |
